Oak Mountain State Park offers equestrian enthusiasts specialized camping facilities with newly remodeled amenities. Located approximately 20 miles south of Birmingham, this 9,940-acre park features dedicated equestrian camping areas with pull-through sites alongside standard camping options. The terrain includes valleys and ridges with elevations ranging from 600 to 1,260 feet above sea level. Seasonal temperature variations make spring and fall ideal for horseback riding activities, while summer months can reach high temperatures and humidity levels.
What to do
Trail riding access: Oak Mountain provides extensive trail networks specifically designated for horse riders with varying difficulty levels. Most trails are well-marked with water access points throughout. "A great State Park. I stayed one night in the Equestrian campground. They are all pull thru with a remodeled bathhouse. It was extremely clean," notes Melinda S. about Oak Mountain State Park Campground.
Fishing opportunities: Lake Martin at Wind Creek offers excellent fishing conditions with multiple docks and shoreline access points for anglers. "Great location, water views. Only negative is that the wifi is not strong, but Verizon signal is great," reports Matthew K. about Wind Creek State Park Campground.
Off-road adventures: For motorized recreation options, Minooka Park provides dedicated trails for dirt bikes and ATVs. "Lots of trails to hit on the dirt bikes or ATVs. We go for day riding trips once a month or so," explains Chris B. at Chilton County Minooka Park.
What campers like
Renovated facilities: Recent updates to Oak Mountain have significantly improved the camping experience with modernized bathhouses and campsite layouts. "They put a massive amount of money into updating this place. This is the #1 best state park campground I have ever been at," shares Soren B. about Oak Mountain Backcountry Site.
Lakeside camping: Sites at Wind Creek State Park offer direct lake access with some featuring private beach areas. "We stayed at site 100 it was an excellent site right on the water next to us was like a private beach. This is the only public access to Lake Martin," explains Rachel G.
Recreational variety: The diversity of activities keeps families engaged throughout their stay with options beyond horseback riding. "Oak Mountain is a big state park with lots to do (golf, biking, archery, lots of trails that are very well marked, petting zoo, very neat trail with rescued owls, turkeys and red hawks, and more)," mentions Scott C.
What you should know
Reservation timing: Book sites well in advance, especially for equestrian camping areas which fill quickly during peak seasons. "Reserved 363 days prior to arriving. Very friendly check in staff," advises Napunani.
Seasonal considerations: Winter visits offer more seclusion while summer brings higher occupancy and activity levels. "We were the only trailer in loop D. It was quiet and very enjoyable! Being right on the lake and having the ducks swim up really thrilled our dogs," reports Erin L. about Wind Creek State Park.
Facility variations: Bathhouse quality and amenities differ between campground sections and parks. "Toilet/shower facility heavily used which badly needs updating. Campground trash dumpsters are beyond the campground gate...not walkable," notes one camper.
Tips for camping with families
Wildlife education opportunities: Visit the wildlife rescue center for an educational experience with rescued animals. "Don't miss the TREE TOP NATURE TRAIL!" recommends Napunani at Oak Mountain.
Swimming access: Multiple designated swimming areas provide safe recreation for children. "Tent camping with family during Hurricane evacuation. Beautiful park, numerous bath houses, laundry, camp store, playgrounds, mini golf, and so much more," shares Kim T.
Beginner-friendly camping: Sites close to amenities make first-time camping experiences more comfortable. "My campground was great for true car campers. The campsite was only a few strides from my car and there was a water spigot 5 steps away," explains Elyssa M.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: Choose full hookup sites in less congested campground sections for more privacy. "We stayed in C section with full hook-ups. They have playgrounds throughout the campground," advises Romeo M.
Navigation challenges: Large rigs should be aware of potential entrance difficulties at some parks. "Poor signage upon entering Park... Limited and very tight rig parking at campground gate check-in," warns Napunani.
Utility considerations: Not all sites offer equal hookup options, so verify specifics before booking. "If you look at the map you'll see that some sites are full hook-up and some are not," notes Romeo M.
