Oak Mountain State Park provides a convenient glamping base for exploring the Spring Garden area, located about 90 miles west of the park. Spring Garden sits in northeastern Alabama at approximately 650 feet elevation, with surrounding mountains rising to over 1,200 feet. The region experiences moderate rainfall year-round and maintains camping-friendly temperatures from March through November.
What to do
Hiking at Deerlick Creek: The campground features a 1/2 mile asphalt walking trail and a hiking trail with hills and valleys along the lake. "Hiking trail with hills and valleys skirting the lake. Boat ramp with easy access to the lake. Convenient access to Tuscaloosa for supplies, eating or just a change of scenery," notes Eric H. about Deerlick Creek.
Mountain biking opportunities: The trail system at Weogufka State Forest connects to the southern terminus of the Pinhoti Trail. "Simple and enjoyable. Caretaker and author Sunny Eberhart (Nimblewill Nomad) is wonderful to talk to. Access to southern terminus of the Pinhoti Trail. CCC tower and cabins from 1930's," says Ro J. about Weogufka State Forest Flagg Mtn.
Water activities beyond swimming: Smith Lake offers excellent fishing and boating conditions. "This campground became one of my favorite AL camping spots! We stayed in site 17 on the Fox loop. It's right on the water and couldn't have been more perfect!! There's even a beach nearby for people to swim, if you like lake swimming!" explains Rebekah C. about Clear Creek Recreation Area.
What campers like
Renovated facilities: Many campgrounds have received recent upgrades. "They put a massive amount of money into updating this place. This is the #1 best state park campground I have ever been at. It has wifi throughout and almost everywhere in the park has cell reception," mentions Soren B. about Oak Mountain State Park Campground.
Privacy between sites: Campgrounds offer varying levels of seclusion. "Private and secluded! All spots r shady. Great level campsites..all campsites r gated. Nice swimming area. Great hiking and waterfalls on the most beautiful lake in the US!" states Tanya A. about Clear Creek Recreation Area.
Year-round accessibility: Most area campgrounds remain open throughout the year. "The sites were level and private, and the staff was friendly and helpful. We watched deer almost tamely walking around the campground," notes Don K. about Deerlick Creek.
What you should know
Bath house availability: Some facilities may be limited seasonally. "They are only keeping open one bathroom at a time, so you have to pick and choose your site when you don't have a built in bathroom(teardrop camper). The hosts keep the bathrooms very clean, and all of them are very nice," advises D.W. L. about Clear Creek Recreation Area.
Reservation considerations: Peak times can be challenging for securing spots. "Reserved 363 days prior to arriving. Very friendly check in staff. Huge park…very nicely landscaped and neatly mowed," says Napunani about Oak Mountain State Park Campground.
Cell service variability: Coverage differs across campgrounds. "No WiFi, but good cell signal with Verizon throughout the park. No camp store, but convenient and grocery stores about 15 minutes away," reports Steve V. about Deerlick Creek.
