The Best Camping Near Winter, Wisconsin

Really nice lake! Caught a nice muskee on it! Wouldn’t swim in it but definitely good for fishing and boating. Also caught a lot of bluegill. Bathrooms are clean and campground isn’t overly buggy. Went on 4th of July and campground wasn’t super crowded nor was the lake. Camp sites are spaced out and you have some privacy.

This campground is further from civilization but is still paved. The road was a bit rough but easily manageable. We went online to find a weekend campground and this was o e with 3 sites left. Even if you show up without a reservation, the sign said to go online or call to claim the spot(Verizon has zero service but it looks like a direct line phone is available). The camp host site is empty and the sign in the vault toilet said it isn’t maintained daily. This leads me to believe that the rangers swing by every so often. We reserved yesterday and the tag was not on our site- I wonder what we would have done if someone already set up in our spot.

  

There is a short trail to a small beach. It continues around the lake where families have cottages. There are atv trails and another hiking trail that we passed on the way in. 

  

Our site has nice distance between the others. Some sites are electric, some aren’t. We didn’t have a lake view but others did. We found plenty of families and dogs in the 30 sites. 

  

This is an out-of-the-way campground with friendly charm. The flies and some mosquitoes joined the ticks in making their presence felt too.

Great rustic camping!

The State Forest is very beautiful. There is a lake as well as the Flambeau River to explore. There are two campgrounds, Lake of the Pines which has 30 non-electric sites and Connor Lake which has 3 electric sites and 26 non-electric. All sites have a picnic table and a fire ring. There are no play grounds. There are only vault toilets at the campground. There is one shower at the ranger station which is about 4 miles away. There is no cell service at Connors Lake Campground. I could not even make an emergency call which was a concern for me. There are many signs that say to go to the ranger station, about 4 miles to make an emergency call. There is no weather safe shelter at the campground. There are 14 canoe camp areas and the park is beautiful. If you like to canoe this is a great park. We did a hike and cut our stay short since we like a bit more services and safety.

Great Canoe and Backwoods Place– Maybe Not the Place for Families

This was my first camping experience in WI and so far did not disappoint. There were a couple of bathrooms and all of the sites looked well maintained. It was very quiet and most people were asleep by like 930.

Quiet and kinda small 

This was our first camping trip into the beautiful Flambeau River State Forest. It was stunning. Plenty to do and see at this campground. It’s the true north woods experience. Large, wooded sites. Secluded from neighbors. Only 7 electric sites right now. There were no showers on site, so we had to drive to the ranger station in order to shower, just a quick 5 min drive. The hiking in the area is amazing, and I would highly recommend taking in the beauty at the falls.
