Great campsite !

You get a lean-to and tent sites.

Near water (collect water with a filter only)

I was able to make a fire but make sure it's okay when you go.

Lots of space for many people.

Not too far from McAfee knob.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Catawba Mountain Shelter?

Spring and fall are ideal times to visit Catawba Mountain Shelter, offering comfortable temperatures and beautiful scenery. Spring (April-May) brings wildflowers and moderate weather, while fall (September-October) showcases stunning foliage. Summer is feasible but can be hot and more crowded with AT thru-hikers. Winter visits are possible for experienced hikers with proper cold-weather gear. For the most pleasant experience, consider weekday visits during shoulder seasons to avoid crowds, especially given the shelter's proximity to the popular McAfee Knob.

Where is Catawba Mountain Shelter located on the Appalachian Trail?

Catawba Mountain Shelter is located on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia, positioned not far from the iconic McAfee Knob, one of the most photographed spots on the AT. The shelter serves as a convenient stopping point for hikers traversing this popular section of the trail. Its strategic location makes it an excellent base for those planning to visit McAfee Knob while hiking the AT. The shelter is accessible via the Appalachian Trail and provides a welcome rest stop for both thru-hikers and day visitors exploring this scenic area of the Virginia mountains.

What amenities are available at Catawba Mountain Shelter?

Catawba Mountain Shelter offers a lean-to structure for sleeping and additional tent sites nearby for overflow camping. A water source is available near the shelter, though water must be filtered or treated before consumption. Fire rings are present, allowing for campfires when conditions permit and fire restrictions aren't in place. The shelter has ample space to accommodate multiple hikers, making it suitable for groups. Beyond these basic amenities, this is a rustic backcountry shelter typical of the Appalachian Trail, so visitors should be prepared for primitive camping with no electricity, running water, or restroom facilities.
