Shafer Backcountry Campsite — Canyonlands National Park
Reviewed Jun. 20, 2024

Points for the views, otherwise meh

We spent several days camping in Canyonlands backcountry and this was our first stop. It has great views but otherwise I would suggest to skip it and move on to the next one. The cons:

  1. All sites are too close to the toilet and it smells and attracts flies
  2. For whatever reason they put boulders so you couldn’t actually drive to your camp site!! Apparently we were supposed to park at the toilet and schlep all of our stuff up the hill to the campsite? We were able to move one boulder and drive onto it but not everyone might be that lucky
  3. No shade or shelter whatsoever. We used our car awning but if you have a rooftop tent/ awning you are counting on see above about the dumb boulders
  4. lots of flies and bugs probably due to the toilet and some proximity to the river
