Great emenities

Our site was wonderful. The picnic table and fire ring was great. We had an electrical hookup and the bathrooms were really clean. Great trails in the park too.

Camping

Overall experience was great. Took us awhile to find our actual site but once we found it everything went really well and we all had a great time!

I wanted to like this so much...

Maybe it was the time of year...

Maybe it was too close to the cities...

Maybe it was a last trip before school starts...

Maybe it was too many bad parents...

Kids, running all over... Even cutting through other campsites... At all hours of the night...

I wanted to like this park, I really really wanted to. Right on the St Croix River, reasonably close. But the other campers ruined it for me. We left after just one night, and had a perfectly lovely night at home.

Good location

We camped here in the summer for one night, our campsite was wooded and private but other sites didn't have many trees and were very open. I have hiked here in the winter and it was very pretty. They groom some of the trails in the winter for better hiking. It was very quiet and a fun hike along the St Croix river, would love to hike here in the summer.

Frogs

The Savanna campground is your typical state park experience. Lots of drive in spots with nice bathrooms. Our site 120 backed up to the wetlands. Being May the bugs had not yet emerged but the frogs were in major heat aka calling out songs of love ALL NIGHT LONG. By the decibel level there were at least a million. The littles had no problem drifting off to lala land but the hubs and I weren't so lucky. I will take the sounds of nature over the city any day though. Luckily I'd drug the family there to try out some night photography so sleeping wasn't really a priority anyway. We also had a nice trail behind us that led thru the wetlands. William O'Brien has a great variety of hiking trails and I highly recommend the Prairie Overlook Trail where the pond it walks around is a plethora of Nat Geo opportunities. An impressive beaver dam and lodge are present and bird varieties abound. I've found a few Morels here as well! You can also take a stroll along the Riverside Trail for views of the St Croix National Scenic Riverway.

  • There's a reason why the phrase "busy beaver" is around. This is a great spot to hike to while staying at William O'Brien State Park.

Busy and Cold at Riverview Campground

William O'Brien State Park has two different camp grounds (plus a couple of group camp grounds and two hike-/cart-in sites. We stayed at the Riverview campground. down the river bluffs from the main portion of the park, and as the name implies, on the shores of the St. Croix River. Our site was a non-electric site on the outside ring, with just a thin slip of woods and a hiking trail between us and the St. Croix river. On a hot summer day, the breeze off the river would be welcoming and cooling, but on an abnoramlly chilly spring day, the wind off the river was a bone-chilling constant. The campsite itself was situated about 500' from the shower/bathroom, and those facilities were clean, and in service, but otherwise unremarkable. There was not a lot of other tent campers at the campground, likely the cold temps kept some folks away, but the electric sites in the rest of the campground were filled with campers. We had the unfortunate experience of being across the road from the loudest group of campers in the campground, as a part of eight different families and their campers used the site across the road from us as their main gathering point. Quiet hours at the campground are from 10pm to 8am, and their festivities carried on until nearly 2am both nights. There was no effort from park staff to enforce quiet hours, which was a bummer.

With the exception of the loud neighbors, and unseasonable cold weather, this was a solid campground, and being near the river with quick access to the hiking trail was a plus.

Camping by the River

This is a great place to see all the various landscapes of the St. Croix River Valley. The campgrounds are well-kept and generally one can get a site without too much hassle if you're not picky. There bathrooms/showers on site and they are, for the most part, clean and in working order. Noise from other campers was negligible. The surroundings were stunning, and really unexpected for a park so close to the Twin Cities.

There are also miles of walking and hiking trails throughout the park.
