Bay City State Park Campground offers seasonal camping and glamping accommodations from May through October near Freeland, Michigan. Located along Saginaw Bay, the park provides camping sites with electrical hookups and modern facilities. The area experiences warm summers with average temperatures around 80°F and cooler fall nights dropping to the 40s, making both tent camping and glamping viable options throughout the camping season.
What to do
Beach activities at Bay City: The park features a swimming area on Saginaw Bay with a sandy beach that's popular during summer months. "The park offers an impressive splash pad and large playground that families particularly appreciate," mentions a camper.
Hiking trails at Sleepy Hollow: Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground offers extensive hiking opportunities through varied terrain. "Beautiful Park...the park is very large, so it is always good to have a vehicle able to drive to the trails and beach," notes Nathan V.
Birdwatching at local wetlands: The Tobico Marsh area contains observation towers for wildlife viewing. "The nature trail around the lagoon is a birder's dream. We saw white egrets blue heron, sand pipers and their babies," reports Jennifer H. from Bay City State Park.
Water recreation on nearby rivers: River View Campground & Canoe Livery provides river access for various water activities. "Nothing like grabbing a tube a flowing down the river with friends," says Megan W.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the cleanliness of bathrooms and showers. "The bathrooms and showers are very clean. They are closed an hour a day for thourgho cleaning and restocked and wiped down in the late evening," writes Sarah S.
Family-friendly environment: Covenant Hills Camp offers a dedicated family atmosphere. "Good, quiet campground (unless your on a site around the playground) lots to keep the kids busy, bonus ice cream store," says David B.
Spacious sites: Many campgrounds offer room to spread out. "The sites near the entrance are very crowded together and filled with large loud groups... It's ok for a quick stop, but wouldn't want to stay here too long," mentions Deb M. about Bay City State Park.
Shade coverage: Trees provide relief from summer heat at most campgrounds. "We had a lot of tree covering, and there are a lot of walnut trees that were shedding a lot this time of the year," explains a reviewer at Sleepy Hollow State Park.
What you should know
Electrical access varies: Some campgrounds have limitations with electrical hookups. "Most electrical posts are designed to accommodate at least 2 adjoining lots, and as many as 4. This in itself is not a concern until you realize the posts are way too far away to reach without an extension," advises Nick W. at Sleepy Hollow.
Seasonal bugs: Insect activity fluctuates through the camping season. "There were quite a few May Flies. According to the park office they're pretty much there all summer. They weren't bad at the campground except at night around the bathrooms," notes Sarah S.
Site conditions: Pine Ridge RV Campground has varying site sizes. "Some camp sites are squished up to others. Other camp sites have plenty of room. So when you are stuck in a spot that is tight it kind of ruins the experience," explains Kristin T.
Reservation timing: Popular campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. "We can book day of until 8pm online. Easy to get into late at night. Big lots," shares Tanner G. about late check-in options at Sleepy Hollow.
Tips for camping with families
Splash pad access: Bay City State Park's splash pad provides water fun for children regardless of lake conditions. "The Spray by the Bay splash pad, a huge timber playground, beautiful sandy beach along Lake Huron, sandy swim area, geocaching, pavilions, well kept bathrooms and changing rooms," notes Sarah S.
Activity schedules: Check if campgrounds offer organized events for kids. "They have campground hosts that facilitate free activities organized by the park. We did a kids craft and enjoyed hot cocoa or coffee Saturday morning and then returned after dinner for Back-to-School bingo and popcorn," shares a Bay City visitor.
Playground accessibility: Otter Lake Park Campground offers family amenities. "Playground is large and nice with a new basketball court and Gaga ball. Bring your bug spray and get ready to enjoy serene nature," recommends Alyssa C.
Water safety planning: For campgrounds near water, pack appropriate safety gear. "We spent all day at the park with 4 kids 6yrs and under and not a single on of them complained of being bored," mentions Sarah S. about Bay City State Park's beach area.
Tips from RVers
Extension cord requirements: Bring longer power cords for electrical hookups. "Be sure to bring at least 100 feet of extension chord if you want electricity, because the power ports are not as accessible from some areas," advises Nathan V. about Sleepy Hollow.
Site selection strategy: Choose sites based on specific needs. "Nice pull through sites, some are tight, but none are impossible. Knowledgeable and friendly staff," notes Mitchell C. about Pine Ridge RV Campground.
Campground services: Some locations offer delivery services for camping essentials. "Wood bundles are available for purchase and they deliver to your site," shares Dawn W. about Pine Ridge Campground.
Late arrival protocols: For after-hours check-in, know the procedures. "Drop box available after 10pm(summer). Between 8p-10p there is a yellow phone to check in with," explains Tanner G. about Sleepy Hollow State Park's late check-in options.
