## Overview

 Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore hugs the Lake Superior shoreline for more than 40 miles along Michigan's northern coast. Lake Superior is the largest, deepest, coldest, and most pristine of all the Great Lakes. Camping at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a great way to relax and enjoy the beauties the lakeshore has to offer. Campgrounds are rustic, and do not provide electric or sewer hookups.  Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore drive-in campsites are rustic and do not have electric, water, or sewer hookups. Campsites provide a picnic table, fire ring with grill grate, and tent pad. The Best Camping Near Grand Marais, Michigan

We arrived on a wendsday just before opening season and had the place basically to ourselves. By Saturday the grounds were full. We stayed at the lower campgrounds closest to the lake. They are first come first serve with no running water and valted toilet. We loved it the nice easy walk to a lighthouse, shipwrecks and amazing sunsets. I'm guessing in peak Season you would want t get there early to mid morning for a site and I could image it being quit difficult on a weekend. we will try to get a spot in August when we go back because we liked it so much. All the sites on the outside are if you can get into the right side back corner you would have it made!

Hurricane River Campground is a rustic campground located along the Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore. The campground is accessible from Au Sable Point Trial Rd, or by Hiking along the North Country Trail. Campsites here are first come first serve. This campground has a Upper and a Lower sections of campsites. The lower section has 11 sites and is close to the shores of Lake Superior. The Upper section has 10 campsites. Some Sites will fit trailers but some are tent only. There are a couple sites for handicap visitors. Handicap sites become available each day to the rest of the public after 6 p.m. if not occupied, they do ask that you leave the next day at your earliest convinces rather than the 12 p.m. normal check out time, so if a Handicap person does come looking for a site the next day early it is available for them to use. This Campground is Rustic and offers vault toilets, drinking water, and trash/recycling bins. And I did see 1 bear box for food storage. Each site has a fire pit, picnic table, and a lantern pole. Each site was separated from the next site by trees, so your sites were so what private.

Each section of the campground has a Kiosk that has a drop box for payment of your site, and information on weather and actives that are in the area, along with the campground rules. There are lot's of things do keep you busy around this campground. You are located along the Pictured Rocks NLS. You can take a 1.5 mile hike along the shores of Lake Superior to the Au Sable Light House stopping to see old ship wreck remains. There are lot's of hiking trails around including the North Country Trail that begins in New York and ends in North Dakota. You could also just spend the day hanging out on the beach, and checking out the small waterfalls along the Hurricane River. The beach and river mouth is located a short walk from the Lower section of the campground, if you are staying at the Upper it is a 0.2 mile hike through the woods to the beach.

If you are planning on staying at this campground I would recommend that you arrive early to get a site especially in the summer months. Be aware of other close campgrounds as back up in case the campground is full. Little Beaver Lake Campground and Twelvemile Beach Campground are a couple that are close by.

Amazing

Campground is fairly close to Grand Marais and the Au Sable Lighthouse. Nice trails around!  The Grand Sable visitors center is a nice stop for some additional ideas of what to see in the area- friendly service. Grand Sable Lake is another fun little place to check out.  You will not be bored since so many great sites are so near- within a bit of a hike or a quick drive. 

  

Wooded sites make for some feeling of seclusion. We were in an area where generators were not allowed so night time was quite peaceful.  Nice amenities here too :)

recommend lower loop site

8 sites near the east end of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. We were less than 100 yards from the lake.  We walked the kayaks easily to the lake. Fantastic hikes throughout the park. We will be back!

Amazing gateway to pictured rocks

One of my favorite places to rustic camp! Sites are first come first serve, planning arrival for certain days and times is required so you can land a site. Hiking is the best part of pictured rocks, bring the right shoes and lots of big spray so you can enjoy Mother Nature’s beauty. No pets are allowed which is a bummer but understandable. I’ve seen bear while driving through the park both times I’ve camped in pictured rocks, so they’re definitely around! 

Michigander must 

We stayed for a night in October in the Upper loop in an RV. There were no amenities or hook ups but we were able to use our generator between 8am and 8pm. There are tons of hiking trails nearby and the other campers were mainly all  tent campers (and most didn't have cars) so we felt a little loud in our RV but maybe that's just because it was off season. Amazing secluded and private sites. Only giving it 4 stars because it was not really our scene. Seemed to be more serious hikers and backpackers. 

Rustic Camping

I went in mid-late November so water and restrooms were closed off by then. I was the only camper there but it was lovely. You can hear the lake waves and you’re steps from the trail to the lighthouse. The grounds are well kept and trash is still picked up intermittently.

Lovely and Isolated in the Fall

A nice rustic campground with only 12 sites. Sites must be reserved ahead of time. There is no cell reception in the campground or in most of Pictured Rock NL. Cell reception is available if you hike 1.5 miles to the Au Sable lighthouse. Pit toilets only and good water available from a spigot. No electric hookups or showers. Sites were nice and level but not big enough for most big RVs. 

Beautiful campground 

This campground is really nice with good sized sites. The Upper loop has 9 sites that are heavily shaded. Pit toilets that are cleaned well daily by Forest service staff.

Hurricane River Upper CG

Hurricane river Lower is a beautiful well kept campground. The sites are very spaceous, especially the ADA site we had during our stay. The only draw back we had was the enormous fire ring that even if you were in a wheel chair, you could not feel the heat from the fire. It was very chilly when we were there in the first week of July, but we had the pleasure of seeing the northern lights!!!There are paths in between all the campsites to either the main road or up to the upper campground. The main campground road is also attached to the lighthouse trail/road and the parking lot to visit the day use area and swim at Hurricane River. The camp host was very friendly amd greeted us upon arrival. 
As far as closeness to sights, we were 2 miles away from the Log Slide on the Grand Marais dunes, 4 miles away from Twelvemile beach and campground, 37 miles to Munising, 12 miles to Grand Marais and there is limited cell service unless you are close to those 2 cities.
There are pit toilets located at the end of the campground road, just before the dumpsters that are bear proof. There is no electric, but generators can be used in the lake front lots, but not the back lots. The quiet hours were 8pm-8am and everyone adhered to this which is hard to find these days.

Fantastic Camping

Stayed here for a night. Love how trees are all around each site so it feels more spread out in nature. No service nearby. About 16 mins from east side of park, like 40 mins to western edge. Bathrooms (open ground toilet) were clean but full of flies so I really wanted to avoid it. Fire pit was great and camp didn’t get super muddy after torrential rain storms. 

Great time for a night stay

Campsite is well shaded in the woods with expected amenities.  Well maintained and great location.  Very easy to find and very easy to get around and see everything on your list while visiting pictured rocks.  Cell service was spotty and weak but not a complete dead zone (at&amp;t).  While campgrounds are heavily wooded the beach is just a short stroll away and I highly recommend making that stroll to check out the sunset.  For those coming from far away: keep in mind this is northern Michigan, bring warm clothes because regardless of the weather during the day nights will get chilly.

Sunsets and easy access to all things pictured rocks

Got lucky and scored a site in this NP campground for 4 nights. Backing in the 28’ trailer was a little tricky to fit it in between the trees. But, once settled in we were surrounded with forest and rocked to sleep with the surf from Lake Superior. 
Verizon signal was all but non existent, but a 1.5 mile hike to the Au Sable lighthouse allowed us to find enough cell signal to get things done. 


Peaceful on the shore of Lake Superior 

Spectacular rustic private cam\[ground on the beautiful shores of Superior. Tent pads are awesome and help keep the rain out of the tents. Peaceful and quiet, the river flows through the camp and gives a beautiful sunset view. Right on the North Country trail which allows you to day hike both east and west and return to a nice cozy campsite at night.

LOWER Campground 

**General:** Very small (12-site) rustic campground on Lake Superior (Pictured Rocks National Seashore); although none of the sites have a direct view or access to the lake, it is just a short walk down some steps to a small but rocky beach. Reservations are required. Same-day reservations are accepted (but the campground was full when we were there). 

  

**Site Quality:** All sites are wooded and spaced a very decent amount of space apart, providing ample privacy. Each site has a tent platform and fire ring with grill grate. No hookups or any type. 

  

**Bath:** Two vault toilets only. Clean but no hand sanitizer so make sure you bring that and a flashlight at night! 

  

**Activities:** A short walk to Au Sable Lighthouse (1.5 miles). We took our chairs and a light snack to the beach to enjoy the sunset. 

  

We appreciated the privacy that foliage provided between sites and generally like small campgrounds compared to large ones. This was only an overnight stay for us. We did not check out the Upper Unit of the campground, about two miles from the Lower so don’t know how many sites are there or what they are like.

Small campground with private wooded sites on Lake Superior

First of all, our site #8 like others was next to the only road that carves through Pictured Rocks. It's not a super busy road but you will hear every single car and truck whizzing by. We should have known but was dismayed to find no washroom just pit toilets. And although there is supposed to be drinking water, we could not find faucet in the Upper campground. We did find one in Lower few minutes drive. Most fortunately there were no campers-from-hell and all was quiet by 10 or so.
