Your Stay Supports a Non-Profit!

Your stay at Recompense Campground supports Wolfe’s Neck Farm - a working organic farm and non-profit organization. Wolfe’s Neck Farm is set on 626 acres with four miles of coastline and is the legacy of a local family farming operation. The family donated the land to the community based on their belief in useful preservation and protection of open spaces. The farm is now open to the public, free of charge every day and is committed to continuing and improving upon the long tradition of sustainable agriculture, recreation and education while preserving its open space.

The campground has oceanfront campsites as well as sites nestled in wooded areas. There are RV sites (some with hookups), tent sites, and even three oceanfront cabins. The farm also has a dump station as well as free showers. You can freely roam the farm (or hike in the adjacent Wolfe’s Neck State Park) or rent a kayak/canoe and explore Casco Bay. Definitely a unique experience and great educational opportunities for families with kids!

Beautiful location, clean, quiet

We stayed for a night in late May. Very clean. Beautiful views. Nice setting. Some sites are out in open, some have a little more privacy. Would have given 5 stars if there was a more privacy between sites.

Beautiful setting on the ocean

Many if the sites are overlooking the ocean. Great playground for kids and convenient locations of bath houses. An enjoyable camping experience close to home.

Camping next to cows and the ocean!

What a unique campground! We loved the concept of camping on a working farm, but being on the ocean as well was pretty awesome combination. If you could can get by without electricity and water, there were too many to count gorgeous spots right along the shoreline. Since we couldn't, we were in the only loop with connections which has no water views. Their website was helpful and being able to book online was nice. Their pictures were a good representation of each campsite. No spots at the campground had sewer connections and the dump station was a pull in and back out because the worker's cars were parked in a way that blocked being able to pull through.

The shower house was the only area with working plumbing. The rest of the campground had pit toilets. They had air fresheners installed, but that did little to help. They also had hand sanitizer installed in our loop's toilet, as there was no running water/sink. Given having no sewer connection and the fact we hate cleaning our shower, we regularly use a campground's shower house. We dreaded our showers here and knocked a star off for them. They were very bare bones, mostly dirty, and were just ugh. They had four stalls and kept the doors open with door stoppers, so all kinds of "things" hung out in them. One night one had some kind of animal poop in it. Not great, but survivable.

The spots on the outer sites on our loop were more spacious and backed up to trees. We were in the inner loop, which we still felt was fine in terms of space, but we backed up to an open field. The sites were clean. Ours was pretty level but there was a drainage ditch that unfortunately lined right up to our door, so we had to be super careful when entering/exiting our rig otherwise we could have fallen into the ditch.

The camp office had some fresh produce and milk from the farm for sell and the farm also had a little stand with more choices. The camp food stand looked awesome. They were advertising a full lobster dinner option on Saturdays and wood fired pizza night on Fridays. They, however, gave us no notice at check-in that they would be closing the stand during our stay, so we missed out.

We didn't do any farm tours, but it looked like they had several options to see things there, especially for kids. We loved our walks through the campground and farm. The dairy cows would be let out at night and were right by the roads and at low tide we watched some folks out digging for clams.

Proximity to Freeport was only a couple minute pretty drive. On the way into town was Bow Street Market which was like a combination grocery/farmers market with a full liquor store. We stocked up there and spent an evening at the outlets in town and LL Bean. The town closes super early at this time of the year, so there wasn't too many options outside of LL Bean after 6p. We drove to Portland for a night, and found that to be super easy from this location.

Cell reception was great for AT&T and Verizon. We didn't need our weBoost. The campground's wifi worked really well.

We'd stay again and recommended it to another couple talking about staying in Freeport.

Just ok

I really wanted to love this campground because it is a really cool concept.

Pros...The restaurant onsite was amazing! I couldn't believe how good the food was coming out of a tiny little shack.

Cons...The campsites were very close together offering little to no privacy. The shower houses were few and far between. The bathrooms were very dirty.

I probably would not stay here again based on my experience.

Wonderful Camping Experience

We decided to visit this campground on their “clean-up” weekend. In return for volunteering we would get free food and a campsite for the weekend. That sounded like a pretty good deal for us and turned out to be a great experience and we loved the campground. The reasons we loved the campground so much was because it was on a gorgeous 630-acre working farm (Wolfe’s Neck Farm) nestled into Casco Bay. The grounds are beautiful and just five miles from downtown Freeport (home to the L.L. Bean Flagship Store, assorted outlets shops, restaurants, grocery, etc.) and a couple of miles from Wolfe’s Neck State Park.

Overall, this campground is located in an idyllic Maine setting and offers the feel you would expect to find in a state park – hiking trails, water for kayaking/fishing, and some sites with lots of space between them. You have expansive water views of the bay that provide a great backdrop for some of the campsites. But best of all, the campground is located on a working farm so you are free to tour the barns, pet a goat, visit the community garden or buy fresh chicken eggs.

Roads and sites are gravel and the overwhelming majority are level. Of the 150+ sites, only 20 have water and electric (50 amp). All sites have picnic tables and fire pits. There is no cable or wifi.  Reservations can be made on-line or by phone. Our Verizon 4G phone and hotspot worked well and we got a half dozen antenna channels (including major stations).

The sites vary widely based on size, privacy, water views, and hook-ups. They discourage RV’s larger than 35’ from coming but I am not sure how strict they are on that because they let our 40’ rig in. There are a scattering of large sites (big enough to fit 40’) but the roads are narrow and the substrate can be soft depending on the amount of rainfall.

While no sites have sewer there is a dump station. However, the dump station is ill-placed and would have been very hard for us to access. Two shower houses (and a laundry) are located on the property and numerous pit toilets are scattered about. Be aware that this campground is very spread out so in some instances sites are far from flush toilets and showers. Water spigots are located throughout the campground. For those without RV’s, there are great little cabins for rent that have gorgeous views, picnic tables, and fire pits.

There is lots to do without even leaving the campground such as taking a hike, visiting the farm animals, attending a lobster bake, there is a playground, you can rent kayaks/canoes/bikes, or fish in the bay.

What we really liked about this campground was being in the picturesque coastal farm setting. We often visited the barn to watch the baby goats and lambs and Spirit was intrigued with the cows. There is plenty of room to walk your dog and enjoy a stroll outdoors.

The proximity to L.L. Bean and downtown Freeport can’t be beat. We especially loved hiking at Wolfe’s Neck State Park and there were plenty of places for Spirit to swim. Casco Bay is amazing for kayaking – just mind the tides.

The not so good things about this park are the lack of sewer and that our patio was in a low, wet spot. Also, some of the water/electric campsites are on very soft substrate which may pose a problem for large RV’s. There are very few flush toilets for this size RV park and I’m sure they are quite crowded in the busy season.

Morning loons by the water

My daughter and I have camped here on 2 different occasions. Last time was about 2 years ago. We camped in middle bay with a small wooded site opposite the bay.it was a lovely spot and heard lots of loons. The campground is very clean and staff are very friendly and helpful. Lots to do and not far from Freeport.

Easy access to Wolfe's Neck State Park

It's only 6 minutes from the park via Wolfes Neck road. When we camped we stayed in the Middle Bay Area for primitive tents only. It wasn't crowded and we had adequate space for 4 people, a fire, and a quiet night!

Bayside Campsites

This campground is fantastic! My friend and I headed up to Freeport for some Bean gear and good times and we have since decided this should be on the list for a future trip. Some of the sites are close together so be sure to look at the map before booking (online booking is super easy). People working the store and registration were great as we came in late at night and they had everything waiting for us. The site we had was private and wooded, in my opinion a perfect tent site (nice and flat as well). From the Farm to walking the streets of Freeport nearby or going to the beach this is a great location right near the ocean.
