Breathtaking and Peaceful

This is a beautiful state park with breathtaking views of creeks along the roadway, wonderful landscape designed by nature, good hiking trails, peaceful campground, and a nice lodge. The campground is a bit tight, especially when lots of cars are in visiting the campers, very peaceful though as the night goes on. The road to the lake could use a little TLC. Trails are marked nicely, as well as how to get to the equestrian site, Day use area, pool, lodge, and restaurant. Restaurant was very good buffet and menu items available. Lodge was clean and well kept. Very relaxing state park.

Enjoyed our stay

Park was nice, clean and has friendly staff. We liked that we could walk to the bathrooms and not have to drive there. We stayed at site 100 and really enjoyed the shade trees. Showers are small but they work and there are only 3 stalls of toilets and 3 showers ( I believe) in the women’s side- unsure of men’s. Plenty to do, including a playground, pool, miniature golf, bike riding, horse back riding, hiking, etc. All sites have a picnic table and a grate over the fire pit. Water wells are easily accessible and they have washers and dryers as well. Check-in location was a bit confusing but eventually figured it out.

Beautiful Scenery

Camper/RV sites are smaller than we are accustomed to. We thoroughly enjoyed the pools, hiking, and cave tours. All staff is incredibly thoughtful and polite. Bathrooms were clean.

5 generations of my family have loved this place

my family have been coming here for 5 generations. it’s definitely a family favorite. Yes it can get crowded, yes there are kids and lots of noise. they’re coming here to have fun too! I grew up in the primitive campground with a huge canvas tent. We’ve graduated to an RV and are on the other side of the campgrounds now but still loving it. I’ve never stayed on the side with the horse camping but we usually run down there for the showers. Canoe the Tygart, take a trail ride, spelunk a Cave, eat a S’more, hike the red trail, see the natural bridge, come for pioneer week, Halloween is a hoot, watch out for skunks, hope you see a wildcat or two, tell a ghost story, play some corn hole, watch out for bears. Anyway go to the caves, you’ll love it.

Great for families

We went to the campground during the Halloween festivities in October 2017. There are a lot of activities to do while at the state park, caving, hiking, kayaking, mini golf, golf, etc. It is a very beautiful park, but you are close to your neighbors. It was very crowded the weekend we were there. The campsite beside us had a pull camper, a truck camper, and 2 small tents. There were about 15 people on the site and it got pretty loud at night. Kids were everywhere riding hoverboards while texting and a lot of traffic driving around. That's the only reason I took off a star, way too crowded with too many people per campsite. The site was very level and nicely maintained. The shower and bath house was clean, could use updating but overall acceptable.

Caves caves caves an more caves..

So after seeing mammoth caves my fiancé and i have been searching for places with caves and camping. We are eventually heading to mexico to do more spelunking. Anyways this campground is great The sites are huge and spread out real well. we were able to spend a night and get a tour the next day which was well worth it. The camping is wooded which would be great for any of you hammock people out there. We set ours up and sleep outside instead of in the van. Are friendly neighbors kept us company....deer haha

The tour guide michael was freaking great. We usually wouldn't spend money on a guided tour but this was the best decision, There are a couple caves to choose from so you'll be able to see a few if you like. The camp ground/resort if perfect for someone just passing through or has the amenities to keep an entire family cozy for a week. What ever your looking for you will find it here, There were a lot less people here than mammoth caves.

Cheers!

Carter Caves

Lots to do hiking, fishing, caves and caverns to explore. Campgrounds was clean. You will need extra water hose and extension cords to get hooked up in a lot of the sites though.

Geology and forests

Definitely get a tour of the caves while you’re here. Camping is among the trees without much geology to see nearby. Pros: nice tent-only loop, very forested, fairly private tent sites, wildlife, many activities (hiking, cave tours, fishing, kayak rentals, swim, put-put, ranger talks), especially friendly & informed guides/caretakers, horse camp is far enough away to not smell like a farm. Cons: pool was a little too chaotic for us (but that’s typical), campground is bustling during the day but quieted down well at sunset.

Carter Caves State Park

I grew up going here while in Boy Scouts. The caves are free to explore on your own. There are a few that you aren't permitted to enter. There is a water cave where you have to wade trough chest deep water to get through it. There are the crawl caves where you are mainly on your knees and belly the entire time. The bat caves where there are hundreds of bats. Hot dog cave where you have to climb up a tree trunk to get into it. The camping is good. There is a State park general store that sales camping essentials if needed. On wknds they play movies on the side of one of the cave walls. This place is an awesome place to take young teenagers. they will have the time of their lives exploring caves.

Carter Caves State Park

Such an incredible park the family loved exploring the trails, waterfalls, rock formations, and water. Check the schedule for ranger programs. The kids really wanted to go horseback riding but evidently it’s BYOH...bring your own horse LOL. The campgrounds had lovely views and lots of trees. We’d definitely return.

Nice and quiet campground

One of my all time favorite places in Ky to camp. The scenery is always relaxing, and the campgrounds are always welcoming. The park has a lot to do, not just the caves. There's tons of waterfalls off the trails, and other things to see. The caves are great to explore as well. Grab a ranger-guided tour and learn something! Great for the kids! (don't touch the bat poo :P)

Carter Caves

Went with a group of scouts to campground, to explore caves and backcountry hike. Campground was busy, but scouts enjoy that. Various levels of cabing experience at a reasonable cost. Lots of hiking, fairly well marked. Almost every hike is relatively short with an arch or natural bridge as a feature. Only negative was we were backcountry hiking, got a permit for same and when we arrived at the location someone else was there. Maybe there were additional backcountry sites but we did I not see them.
