Best Equestrian Camping near Palos Heights, IL

Kankakee River State Park features a dedicated Equestrian Campground in Bourbonnais, Illinois, located about 45 miles southwest of Palos Heights. The campground accommodates horses and provides basic amenities including drinking water, toilets, showers, and trash collection. While no specific horse corrals are listed in the facility information, the campground is designed specifically for equestrians camping with their horses. The area allows pets and permits fires, though alcohol is prohibited. The equestrian camping area lacks electric hookups, picnic tables, and water hookups that are available at other campgrounds within the same state park. The storm shelter is sometimes locked, which can be concerning during emergencies.

The equestrian section of Kankakee River State Park connects to miles of trails along the Kankakee River where riders can explore natural landscapes. Potawatomi Campground, another section of the same park, offers additional camping options with more amenities including electric hookups and water access, though it's not specifically designated for horses. For those seeking more developed facilities, Leisure Lake Resort accepts pets and offers cabin accommodations, though it similarly lacks dedicated horse corrals. Sites throughout Kankakee River State Park provide privacy with lush vegetation between campsites. The river is accessible but swimming is not permitted, making it suitable only for watering horses while supervised. Park trails are well-maintained with crushed gravel surfaces ideal for horse traffic.

    Paul Wolff Campground

    Great value Chicago suburb campsite

I've camped here four different occasions this 2020 covid-19 year. The staff are super nice and the campground has great social distancing rules in place for the check-in shack and bathrooms. It is a super clean campground with multiple hosts and forest preserve staff. There are a large number of RV pads overlooking the prairie and a few along a grove of trees. I was lucky once to see the equestrian area full of campers with their horses. There are 9 walk-in tent sites about 10-20 yards from parking (the two at the end p7 and p9 are connected for groups that know each other). There are multiple ada sites and two "walk-in/ie roll-in" site in the tent-only area. It's a good mix of young people, retired people, and families. I've seen weekends with mainly RVs and one weekend with a quarter of the drive-in sites being tents. The most shaded sites are p1,3,5,7 and 9. Many of the sites in the middle are wide open with little shade but nice summer breezes. Prices are a great deal if you live in Kane county but still worth the trip if you live in another county. Firewood is $7 for about .75 cu ft (what you can fit in a milk crate.) There are a few trails and I've seen lots of butterflies, gold finches, hawks, deer, flocks of giant sandhill cranes, rabbits, ground squirrels, and of course actual squirrels. Lots of people (including me) bring their leashed dogs. The other campers have been polite and friendly. I wish there was more distance between sites in the water/electrical loops for more privacy, but I'd go every weekend if I lived in Kane county because it would be worth the resident price even tho there are so many RVs. Because there is electrical it is a peaceful campground with no generator noise.

    Not for #vanlife

Full hook ups and electric sites plus some restricted Equestrian and walk in sites
Not for #vanlife. I tried to pay for a tent site and was told “you’re not supposed to sleep in your car” “this campground is for RV’s only”

    Big Rock Campground

Wide open with very young trees

Grass camping. The spaces are pretty level. The trees will be terrific in about 20 years. There is nothing much to do here, or nearby. It’s clean and the comfort stations are new. There is electric at the sites and water spigots throughout, although not really at each space. I saw where some campers hooked about 150’ of hose to spigots behind the loops to run to their campers. The dump station is good. It’s expensive, for what is there, if you are not a Kane County resident. There appears to be some equestrian space and trails. Quiet.

    Big Rock Campground

    No shade, no shower

No Shade, and no showers. This is a relatively new campground not too far (about an hour drive) from Chicago. We looked at this place when we were looking for a spot to camp for a local wedding. But, no shade in the Illinois heat and no shower made it unacceptable. There were paved roads and the sites looked large and level. There was water and electric And a dump stations at the entrance/exit.

Potowatomi Campground — Kankakee River State Park

Simple state park along the river

Potowatami campground is divided into four loops. We camped in the Osage loop. Garbage cans are at the start of the loop. A central shower house is on the main road midway between the loops. Right at the start of Osage is an entrance to the crushed gravel bike path. It gave us a great hike through the trees. You can find picnic areas and playground equipment by following the bike path. The camp host checks you in. He gave us the signal in case we drive out of camp. Wave the sign out your window and re-enter camp. He also told us about rock creek nature trail. It’s just across the main road near the ranger office entrance. There are another couple miles of trails if you want some diversity.

    Paul Wolff Campground

Beautiful hiking so close to everything

Campground is rather basic but the primitive camp sites were beautiful. Half of them were in the Prairie and the other half was tucked into wonderfully private spots with burn pits and picnic tables. We hiked the trail and saw a mother deer feeding her 2 babies. Hard to belive that there is hiking trails like those in such a densely populated are just outside elgin, il

    clean close to home

We like this campground because its close to home and its clean/large campsites. But there aren't any showers and you need to pay with cash or check. No credit cards. This year the prices have also gone up for people that live outside the park district - bummer. Hard to pay that much when you can't shower or clean up. Depending on where you camp there are pit toilets and also a real nice flush toilet bathroom. There is a lake for fishing and some trails.

Potowatomi Campground — Kankakee River State Park

Great for our 2 person campout!

My fiancé and I stayed in the Hickory Loop spot 3. We are very new campers, so we just have a very basic tent setup. When we checked in with the host, there were bundles of firewood for $8 (either cash or cash app). The spots are not huge, and not super private (you have next door and across the street neighbors), but we didn’t mind that! There were two outlets available, and a small rectangular fire pit with a grate on top. There are a few water pumps and vault toilets within walking distance, but we were pretty close to the shower house, which had stalls for toilets and showers. The showers were pretty great for a camp ground!

It rained a ton during our trip so we didn’t explore much, but would definitely recommend for a simple camping trip where you want flushable toilets, showers, and some electricity.

The terrain features varied landscapes along the Kankakee River with crushed gravel trails suited for horse traffic. Winter temperatures typically range from 17°F to 32°F, while summer brings 65°F to 85°F averages with moderate rainfall patterns affecting trail conditions throughout the year.

What to do

Hiking trails exploration: Several campgrounds near Palos Heights offer extensive trail systems. At Kankakee River State Park, the landscape includes "rock cliffs that are suspended over the Kankakee river and also over a creek that feeds it. These are great for climbing and scaling. Additionally, there are Indian caves through the creek where you can still find arrowheads," notes Andrea F.

Cycling opportunities: The paved paths at Paul Wolff Campground provide smooth surfaces for biking. One visitor mentioned, "On one hike we were on paved, sifted gravel, grass and single trek trails. There are a lot of loops giving you options. When we left we still hadn't hiked all of them."

Horseback riding trails: For equestrians seeking dedicated paths, trails at Kankakee River State Park connect directly to the Equestrian Campground. The park features "miles of trails along the Kankakee River where riders can explore natural landscapes" with terrain specifically designed for horse traffic.

Wildlife observation: The preserves around Palos Heights support diverse wildlife viewing. At Paul Wolff Campground, campers report, "I've seen lots of butterflies, gold finches, hawks, deer, flocks of giant sandhill cranes, rabbits, ground squirrels, and of course actual squirrels."

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Big Rock Campground offers "big, level sites" according to Melissa C., who adds, "Even though they don't take reservations, there is plenty of space and availability." This makes it convenient for spontaneous trips from Palos Heights.

Natural privacy barriers: Many sites at Paul Wolff feature natural separation. As one reviewer explained, "The sites are well spaced. Full trees around the perimeter, but not a lot for shade over the campsites." This provides a balance of openness and privacy.

Lake access for horses: Horses require water sources, and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort offers water access. One visitor noted, "The lake is beautiful and surprisingly picturesque as it is all nature preserve on the opposite side." While not specifically for horses, the lake provides a natural feature appreciated by all campers.

Family-friendly facilities: For those seeking equestrian camping with family near Palos Heights, Kankakee River State Park gets high marks. One visitor shared, "We had four sites on Osage loop for tent camping. Two were very small (14&15), and little grass for tent setup, fine for RV or trailer campers. They were private with brush between sites. 16&17 were amazing for tents!"

What you should know

Site-specific features: Campsite layouts vary significantly at each location. At Leisure Lake Resort, there are "aspects we've truly enjoyed, and they're the main reasons we've continued our stay: the spacious layout of the RV park, a nice lake, beach, pool, gym, and a dog park."

Water quality concerns: Some campgrounds have inconsistent water quality. A Leisure Lake Resort visitor warned, "Water quality has been very bad. On one occasion, our pet had stomach issues after drinking tap water, which was concerning."

Limited shade in newer campgrounds: Big Rock Campground has an open layout with minimal shade. As Joel R. notes, "This is a relatively new campground not too far (about an hour drive) from Chicago. But, no shade in the Illinois heat and no shower made it unacceptable."

Storm shelter access: Safety facilities may not be consistently available. Multiple campgrounds have reported issues with storm shelters being locked during severe weather, which poses safety concerns for equestrians camping with valuable animals.

Tips for camping with families

Nature center activities: Kankakee River State Park offers educational opportunities for children. Linda N. shares, "We did have a really awesome time at the main office/nature center, where my kiddos got to feed and hold a variety of reptiles!"

Site selection for tent space: When camping with children near Palos Heights, choose sites with adequate play areas. Shannon H. recommends specific sites: "16&17 were amazing for tents!! Open, tall trees for our tight rope and hammocks and shade. Grass for tents."

Supervised water access: While swimming may be restricted at some locations, shallow water play is possible. Linda N. explains, "The river was nice to visit and we were able to take the kids to some knee deep water to play (swimming is NOT allowed in the river)."

Weather considerations: Summer heat can limit outdoor activities. Linda notes, "Playgrounds are unfortunately exposed so it was not suitable for the 100 degree days we had." Plan activities in shaded areas during hot weather.

Tips from RVers

Hookup logistics: At Big Rock Campground, water connections require planning. Amanda K. advises, "Water hookup is far behind camping pad - bring extensions!" This is especially important for RVers with horses who need reliable water access.

Loop selection for horse trailers: Kankakee River State Park has varying loop sizes. Shannon H. notes, "Where the loops get close on the map, the sites back up with good space without ground brush - if you're trying to string together a few sites for a group where you can pass through."

Equestrian-specific areas: When seeking horse campgrounds near Palos Heights, Marisa A. observed at Paul Wolff Campground, "I was lucky once to see the equestrian area full of campers with their horses." This confirms the presence of dedicated equestrian facilities beyond just Kankakee River State Park.

Seasonal considerations: Most equestrian campgrounds near Palos Heights have limited seasonal availability. Big Rock remains "open year round" while others like Fish Lake Beach operate from "May 1 to October 15," requiring planning for off-season horse camping trips.
