What campers like
Spacious, private sites: Many campgrounds in the Conyers area offer well-spaced camping spots. "The campground is not cramped at all and most of the sites are spread apart to provide privacy!" shares George & Patty C. about Hard Labor Creek State Park.
Waterfront camping at Newton Factory Shoals: Several sites offer direct water access with platforms for tents. "We had a happy little bonus of getting to watch the beavers play in the river early in the morning. Each of the sites have a raised gravel platform for tents, a grill, trash can, and a fire pit," describes Nicolle, who stayed at a riverside site.
Wildlife viewing at Liberty Stables: This working horse farm provides a unique camping setting. "Beautiful property with farm animals to look at," reports Rachel, who appreciated the rural atmosphere during her stay.
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain high standards for bathhouses and common areas. "The bathhouses/comfort stations are brand new (including laundry rooms) and the camp hosts keep them spotless!" notes George & Patty C. about Hard Labor Creek State Park.
What you should know
Equestrian camping availability: Several horse campgrounds near Conyers offer dedicated facilities for riders and their mounts. While the Georgia International Horse Park provides developed camping with amenities, smaller properties like Equitopian Escape Farm offer more primitive options with just three designated campsites.
Campground location confusion: Some recreation areas have separate day-use and overnight camping sections. "Note to future campers: the campground is NOT located at the address provided. This is the recreational park. The campground is actually up the road, on the opposite side of the park, at the entrance of the graveyard," advises Nicolle about Factory Shoals.
Weekend crowds vs. weekday tranquility: Timing your visit can significantly impact your experience. "Have waited six months into our RV life to start reviews for fair comparisons. Spent 7 nights. The weekend nights were so crowded with cars spilling into the camp roads, loads of large groups at each site. Felt very claustrophobic. On weekdays the park became a(lovely) ghost town," shares Christina about Hard Labor Creek State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Mini-golf at Hard Labor Creek: Kids enjoy the recently renovated course within the park. "The park has numerous cottages to rent, a group shelter, picnic pavilions and even a mini-golf course (newly renovated)!" mentions George & Patty C.
Farm animal experiences: Children can observe various domestic animals at Liberty Stables, a 54-acre working horse farm. "We really enjoyed our time at Liberty Stables! Will definitely stay there again as our granddaughters live nearby! Highly recommend!" shares Leslie V.
Swimming beaches: Several parks offer designated swimming areas with sandy shores. "It has a putt putt (mini golf) course. You can rent kayaks and kayak in the lake. They offered a kayak by moonlight group tour that was fun," notes Maethea R. about the recreational options at Hard Labor Creek State Park.
Tips from RVers
Follow designated routes: Some campgrounds have specific access roads for larger vehicles. "The campground is a good campground— clean and fairly easy for our big fifth wheel to get in to. Be careful and follow the Campground signs and not your GPS because you might come in a different way and have to navigate an overpass that, for done rigs, is too short!" warns Debbie K. about Hard Labor Creek State Park.
Limited big rig options: Many equestrian campgrounds near Conyers have size restrictions for RVs. "The campground was full on Saturday when we arrived but cleared out during the week. This campground is definitely set up for primitive camping, focusing more on tents. We have a 10 foot trailer. We were able to back in to our spot with no problem. The site was not level but that wasn't a big deal for us in our rooftop tent. We didn't check out the other sites but an RV would probably have a hard time setting up here," explains Nicolle about Factory Shoals Recreation Park.
Full hookup availability: Only specific sites offer complete services. "We paid for a deluxe site but nothing indicated on the reservation it had sewer connections. Had we known we would have taken showers in our own camper," notes Maethea R. from her experience at Hard Labor Creek State Park.
