Priest Lake Dispersed Camping Area

Excellent Spot!

A decent-sized group of us stayed in mid-July in this dispersed campground. The area felt off the beaten path and somewhat remote without being too isolated. It's a stunning campground, with excellent views, and a decent variety of campsites. It's just under a 20-minute drive to Telluride as well!

You do need at least all-wheel drive to get in and out of this campground, and I would not recommend it for sedans or lowered vehicles. The road in is dirt, but the actual campground road and "parking" is very rocky. A neighbor's Subaru popped a tire during their stay, and it got fairly muddy and treacherous in the rain.

Bring your own toilet paper, and be aware that there is NO running water. There is a decently clean out-house style bathroom, but it is still just a toilet over a hole in the ground. They did come and pump it out once during our 3-night stay, but I'm not sure how often that happens. You also need to pack out your trash, but there is a convenient dumpster at Lizard Head Pass trailhead, which is less than 5 minutes down the road.

We saw many deer and birds during our visit, but not much else wandered through our campsite. The sites also come equipped with fire pits and picnic tables, and all in all we had everything we needed and thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
