A run down and neglected CG
We are full-timers and have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 1 for 2 days in late June. We had dropped our Cherokee just past the start of FR-440 and went to scout the area. I’ll get to the Hinman review in a minute. There is some dispersed camping further down Seedhouse Rd (County-64/FR-400) on FR-4002C that is right on the river, but that spur is extremely rough (large rocks, potholes and ruts), so we elected not to try it in our RV, though we did venture down it a little ways in our Cherokee. There were several tents and one pickup camper down there not very far from the start of the road, but no one past that that we could see. Then we scouted Hinman, which was well less than ideal, but we needed a place to stay. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot nice to say about this CG. We would have stayed longer, but at$10/night, it wasn’t worth it. The picnic tables were in disrepair and most of the sites were extremely short and so sloped as to not be useable by any camper/RV, though a car and a tent might be able to use them, but there weren’t really many places to pitch a tent either. There were only 3 of 13 sites that would accommodate us, two pull-throughs and one back-in(site 13) and only the latter was mostly level. We did manage to get mostly level in site 1, which was quite large, but the front wheels were off of the ground a fair bit. This is a tiny CG(the loop is about 1/4 mile), which would be ok, but it is completely surrounded by private land, so you can’t even get down to the Middle Fork Elk River here, which is what we were hoping to be able to do, and there are signs indicating river access is private and permission is needed. Also, the hand water pump handle had been removed and so is out of service. There were quite a few dear in the CG and an elk or two as well, which was nice. There is no AT&T nor T-Mobile signal this far up Seedhouse at all, even with our weboost. There are only a few tall trees at any of the sites, so we were able to get DISH coverage on all three western satellites at our site. There were no OTA channels to be had with our fixed omni antenna.
