Joe Wheeler is open

Basically there are two sections to this park. The newer section is very big rig orientated. Having been rebuilt due to hurricane, wide roomy sites well spaced, but not a tree in site. All sites both old & new are full hook up. The older section is very, very tight and not a one very level. The older section is fully treed, which makes things even tighter.

Good ATT & Verizon cell service. No wifi in campgrounds Not my first choice, bu it worked.

This campground is OPEN

The Dyrt is showing the campground as closed, but it is, in fact, OPEN.  They have reopened after a tornado caused extensive damage.  They have added new rv sites as well.  During a recent drive through the campground, nearly all rv sites were occupied and the primitive section was accessible as well.

Newly renovated and very nice

These newly renovated camp grounds are perfect. We have a 21ft camper and the pads were huge. Lost have full hookups. I did not use the bath house but we were happy with everything!

Nice and easy primitive camping

Stayed at the primitive campsites, very shady with lots of woods nearby. Pretty crowded but everyone kept their space, trees to hang hammocks on and the dock was on the primitive site for non motorized boats. Not many trails but good for an easy weekend away.

Great park with lots to do

There were many options for sites, including nice pull throughs. Some were well shaded , others had nice water views. We had an oversized site that was a pull through. We got there after sunset, so it was nice to have a quick and easy set-up. Large swimming lake, hike loops, playgrounds, leisure areas including picnic sites, tennis, basketball, and disc golf give you lots to choose from. They also had a large marina and a restaurant on the property.

We will be back in warmer weather for sure.

Nice lakeside park

Nice quiet park out on the lake. We were in loop C at the end of the improved sites. The site was level, but the power, water, and sewer were all closer to the center or front of the site than the rear. That wasn’t a dealbreaker, but the sewer was a good bit higher than the paved pad. This made dumping the black tank a little iffy at best. That aside, the park is full of deer, squirrels, birds, all kinds of stuff for the kids to look at. The playground is a bit dated, and the bathhouse could use renovation, but was functioning and relatively clean. The sites are too close together which was nice. It looked as though all of the improved sites had a fire ring and picnic table. There was a dumpster at the end of our loop where the road to the primitive campsites started, so it was only about a minute walk away. The camp store at the front had all the essentials and some souvenirs, as well as the laundry facility. Everyone we met there, including the staff and volunteers, were all great. The kids loved it, and we will definitely be back to the park again.

Beautiful but crowded

Joe Wheeler campground is beautiful but when we went in early June it was packed with RVs, and most of the campsites around us had multiple vehicles/people at each site. The day use lake beach is wonderful. There were several places to launch a kayak, and the views on the river are hard to beat in the area. I don’t think I’ll camp there again, but I would definitely kayak or go to the lake beach on a day trip.

OK campground

It was an okay campground. Just be careful what site you get cause we could not fit into ours. It claimed to be for a 45 foot camper but we could not get our 36 foot camper in that spot. Luckily we came with other people and were able to swap sites around. The swimming/day use area was nice.

Joe Wheeler State Park

There were several of us on this trip. Had lots of fun. Had a nice hiking trail by Wheeler Lake. It was cool camping in February 2017 and we cooked over the fire and enjoyed the nice weather. The sites were pretty level, so setup was simple. I recommend this campground and we will return.

Grew up camping here

Loved it as a kid and still love it today! This is a great spot located in Northern Alabama just east of Florence on the Tennessee River. This is a good spot for exploring some of the cool spots in the area including the musical landmark of Muscle Shoals.

There are improved and primitive sites available, depending on what your looking for. Primitive sites are simple and improved sites come in all shapes and sizes (i.e. some have sewer, some are 50 amp, 30 amp, etc.). While the improved sites cater to RVs, they are nice for tents as well. The campground is full of great trees if you're hoping to sling a hammock for your stay.

There's a store and a nice boat launch readily accessible. Be sure to get a site right on the water if you can. Here's a map to help! http://www.alapark.com/sites/alapark.com/files/JoeWheelerStateParkCampgroundMap.pdf

Ehh.. It was ok.

This campground is totally for those who want to get on the Tennessee River for fishing or boating. We are neither of those things but we do like to have places to explore and things to do. We were rather disappointed as a result. Joe Wheeler Resort is a beautiful place and the lodge is on the river but only a small part of the campground is on the river. I was surprised at our disappointment because so many of our friends love to camp here. We found the sites to be too close together and it was quite noisy. On a positive note, the staff was very friendly and helpful. Also, the bathrooms and showers were pretty nice. The nicest part of the campground was the primitive area. It was gorgeous!! If you do stay here, go to the resort and have a meal. They have a buffet most nights and we have always found the food to be good. If I were on my was somewhere else and would only be here for one night, I would give it a go again, but this will not be our place for an extended stay.
