Rock Creek Campground — Rock Creek Station State Rec Area

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Rock Creek Station State Historical Park sits along a stretch of southeast Nebraska where the Oregon Trail and Pony Express routes once crossed, and the campground within it reflects that same grounded, no-frills character. Sites are paved back-ins with shade available in the morning and evening hours, and full hookups including 30-amp electric, water, and sewer make this a functional stop for RVs. A separate equestrian loop runs adjacent to the main camping area and operates on a more rustic setup. Campers interested in places to camp around Rock Creek Station State Historical Park will find this one of the more developed options in the immediate area.

Tent campers should know going in: only two designated tent sites exist here. Both are located near the trailhead that connects to the historical park, where an interpretive center covers the Pony Express and Oregon Trail in considerable depth. The trail access gives non-RV campers a direct route to that history without needing to drive. Cell service varies by site, with site 20 noted by at least one regular visitor as having the strongest signal.

A few practical notes worth flagging before arrival. Water is shut off after November 1, so late-season campers need to fill from a well pump on-site. Showers are coin-operated. Road access from both US HWY 136 to the north and NE HWY 8 to the south is paved, though one reviewer arrived via unmarked dirt roads and never located the campground at all, so confirming directions in advance is worth the effort. John A. describes it as a "quiet camp area with paved back in sites," which holds for most of the year. Reservations are available and pets are allowed, making this a reasonable base for bow hunters, history-minded travelers, and anyone passing through campgrounds near Fairbury on a longer Nebraska route.

Pretty Good!

Broadcasting this now because I was not aware when I showed up: there are only two designated tent sites in this entire campground. However, both these sites are clean, beautiful, and located near the trail that takes you to the (honestly very well-presented) adjacent historical park. Out of the two Nebraska state recreation areas I stayed at on my trip through the state, this one is definitely my favorite. I would give it 3.5 stars, but the coin-operated showers knock it down to a 3.

Clean, quiet campground

Favorite place to stay for early season bow hunting. Camp hosts are always kind and do a great job. Site #20 has best cell service.

No water after Nov. 1 and have to fill from well pump.

Nice quiet campground

Quiet camp area with paved back in sites for RV/Campers. Our site had a standard 30A electric hookup, with 20A duplex outlet as well. Nice shade in the early and later part of the day for most sites.

Equestrian camping loop is separate from the main camp area and appeared a bit more rustic.

Interpretive center related to the Pony Express and Oregon Trail in the adjacent Historical Park. Paved road access to the park from both the north and the south from US HWY 136 or NE HWY 8.

Thumbs down...

We looked and looked for this place and never found any campground or signs for it. The roads were all narrow dirt and bumpy. Found unlit dirt parking in the wildlife management area where we able to turn around and go back. Ended up spending the night in the square of Geneva, NE.
