Walnut River Area — El Dorado State Park

Anglers and families looking for lake access will find Walnut River Area positioned along the shores of El Dorado Lake within El Dorado State Park. This established campground operates year-round with over 1,000 sites spread across multiple camping areas, offering both drive-in and walk-in options with full hookups available for RVs.

The campground provides direct access to fishing opportunities on both the lake and Walnut River, plus hiking and biking trails that wind through the park. Sites vary significantly in condition and privacy, with some areas featuring large shade trees while others remain more open. Several camping loops serve different needs, from basic tent sites to full-service RV spots with electric, water, and sewer connections.

Maintenance issues appear consistently across reviews, with Tom D. noting "deferred maintenance" and ongoing problems like leaking water pipes at individual sites. Restroom facilities receive frequent criticism for cleanliness and privacy concerns. The proximity to railroad tracks creates noise throughout the night that may disturb light sleepers. Rule enforcement varies, with some areas experiencing overcrowding and noise violations during peak seasons.

For those planning extended stays in the El Dorado area, campgrounds near El Dorado offer additional options. The park works best for campers prioritizing water activities and trail access over pristine facilities, particularly during off-peak periods when crowds thin out.

Campers regularly cited the beautiful shaded sites and family amenities as highlights. However, several guests reported problems regarding poor restroom conditions and lack of rule enforcement during busy periods.

Big Oaks and Big Noise

We just did a quick overnight camp on a road trip out east. No noise from other campers, but this is near a railroad track or maybe even depot. So there was constant noise throughout the night. If you are a hard sleeper, you might be fine! Otherwise—not the best! We didn’t use the facilities here, so can’t speak to the bathroom, though there is one.

Lots of bugs this time of year, which whatever. BUT you can pull into this site at any time. There are self pay stations as you drive in or you can pay with the rangers if their station is open. It was a fine pit stop. Served its purpose.

Could be a Great State Campground

We stayed here in mid October of 2025. This state park has over 1000 campsites as noted on line. We did not have reservations and drove around to a few of the FHU campgrounds till we found a spot. Big Oak and Frontier Refinery sites had the unkempt look of full timers. To say that this state park has much deferred maintenance is kind. Our site had a leaking underground water pipe that provided a constant puddle. The neighbor to us said it had been there all summer. The grounds are very unkempt and enforcement of rules seems to be non existent. Only plus is the number of activities available, but we cannot attest to the conditions. One of the worst state campgrounds we have ever stayed. We would definitely choose another campground when in the area.

Better than Bluestem

Finally we found a campsite in Old Oak. Beautiful setting. Showers/toilets were were better than the archaic ones in Bluestem that have no roofs, but barely. Broken soap dispensers, cold water, no privacy in showers, etc.

Big Oak Campground

You'd think the Big Oak Campground in El Dorado State Park would be amazing. It's shaded with huge trees, nice sized sites some of which are very spread out, a quick walk to the swim beach and a quick drive to put your boat in the water. Unfortunately these pluses are far outweighed by the negatives. First the bathrooms were horrible. I realize they are older restrooms but they smelled awful, they were never obviously cleaned, the showers were not even a tiny bit private, the door to the restroom was broken and had to be propped open with a tree branch. Just over the bridge at the swim beach they were worse and some of the doors in the women’s room were missing. Yuck! Secondly basic campground rules were not enforced at all. The site across from us easily had 30 people camping and were up until 4am with loud music and a bright light on. I’m not kidding, my daughter was up around 3 to use the restroom and we walked by twice. The family in the site next to us had at least 4 cars and 2 tents set up outside the site on the walking path in addition to their two tents in their own site. The dog free swim beach had dogs on it. We camp with our dogs, one of which loves to swim and even I don’t want dogs on a public beach. Our camping weekend was negatively affected by poor camping etiquette and a sever lack of basic rule enforcement. We won’t be back to El Dorado State Park Big Oak campsite any time soon, at least not during the busy summer camping season. Cross Timbers and Fall River are much better!

Graet Little Area

Three nice campgrounds, large playground, fishing and a swim beach. Worth the stop with the kids.
