Set back behind the Grand Teton Mountains. Camp sites are primitive, no water, toilets or other amenities. Camped next to Grassy Lake Reservoir, beautiful lake nestled in the mountains. Only drawback was the mosquitoes.
We rolled into this road around 7pm on a Sat. Most spots were occupied but we asked to share with someone who wasn't using the tent site (spot 8). Holy moly where the other reviews right about mosquitoes - they were the thickest I've ever seen. Earlier sites (1-3) may have been ok but we were deeper in the woods. They were so bad we set up our tent and skipped dinner so we wouldn't have to leave again
I got the last site available and felt so lucky! Even the park ranger said I must be lucky lol. There is a sanitation agent who comes to clean/remove trash every day but you can opt out of it during your stay if you let them know. Park rangers also check in with you to make sure you follow the rules. My site had a clear mountain stream so it was wonderful to have a water source. I never stayed at the other sites but I know site 8 was the best! Add a vault toilet (with surprisingly nice smelling hand sanitizer!), picnic table and a fire ring...I felt so spoiled! This was the best site I had my whole trip so far and it was close to Grand Teton and Yellowstone. There is a 14 day limit and it is very difficult to get a site (I got there on a Sunday morning and someone had just left). If they are all full, Targhee National Forest offers dispersed camping with no amenities but there are several lakes with nice views. The bugs were a bit of an annoyance but bug spray and campfire smoke helped with that
Can’t beat being in between both national parks. Clean facilities and we had a lot of fun!
Stayed here for 2 nights and really enjoyed it! My site neighbor was there to hunt and was extremely friendly. The site said only 2 spots but we were able to fit one more tent and a small RV in there as well. Very beautiful view of the Tetons and right along the river!
Super nice spot!! With the cleanest bathrooms! We camped at the 3rd spot in that had 2 campsites. But on our second day there we got back from the park around 3 to find our tent completely open with sleeping bags hanging out and a puddle in the bottom of our tent…. The tent in the site next to our had been picked through as well!! Definitely wasn’t an animal. You could tell someone was snooping for sure. Luckily we only had sleeping bags in the tent which they didn’t take, but was still a shame! Don’t leave any valuables! But other than that it was really an awesome spot!
Awesome views, bathrooms are very clean.
We got in super late at night and still happened to get a spot. Don’t be afraid to keep driving. It’s a long road with lots of spots.
We camped along Grassy Lake Rd on the way to Yellowstone from the Tetons. The first 7-10 sites are developed and have trash/bathrooms at each site. Some have 2-3 sites at each camp. We were not able to get a developed site but apparently the road goes all the way to Idaho with random primitive pull-offs to camp. We drove about 30 minutes past the last developed site to find a nice area next to a little creek and a bridge. We saw maybe 3-4 vehicles pass through the whole night and morning we were there. Definitely has that middle of nowhere feeling the farther you drive and we loved it! Watch out for mosquitoes and bears!
We arrived late on a Friday night and knew space was limited but there was nothing. Even in spaces where the signs said 2 sites available there was 4+tents and more cars. Drove the road for 45 min looking and finally pulled over to sleep in our car in a "no camping" zone. We were not bothered so that was great.
I stayed at Grassy Lake Road the night before entering Yellowstone National Park from the South.
This road has at least 7 free developed campsites, but likely many, many more than that. I passed the first 6 because they were all taken, but #7 was open.
Each site has a real bathroom, trash containers, fire pit, and grill!
My stay here was perfect, I'd definitely stay again!
I think there are 20 primitive sites along the dirt or gravel road. We stayed in #9. A few of the first sites have 3 or more tent spots, but as you drive further down the road, they are single sites. We helped a Jeep that was stuck on the side of the road 😂 but we also saw a camper van pass by our site, so be careful on the road. We set up camp as fast as we could and ate snacks for dinner so we didn’t have to leave the tent. Somehow the mosquitos were getting in so we spent the night killing so many mosquitos. It was miserable, I would never stay at this site again. Maybe the ones closer to the river aren’t as bad? All of the previous sites were filled up and we had many cars pull into our site throughout the night. There seems to be a lot of hiking and bicycling trails.
