Way To Crowded
If you can get there before everyone else, its a cool spot as long as the noob before you cleans up. Years ago it was a sure thing...now, GOOD LUCK! Last time there was June 2022, got there on a Thursday afternoon, driving up the mountain was all good, happy mood, then started seeing campers and kept telling my wife "we're good" we'll go up a little more; well there are only so many spots and they were all taken...panic sets in and lucky found a mediocre spot. Clearly says "no fires" ass holes on both sides had fires. A land owner came flying down in his truck and I thought I was going to witness a murder. I would have done the same thing! Another thing is....all these noobs are distorting amazing places like this "WAS" with their SHIT and GARBAGE. Thats messed up, l know if you are readying this YOUR BETTER THEN THAT. Please educate people to clean up, if they are assholes about...kick their ass, they have no right to destroy these beautiful places. Also, the land owners are getting feed up with it, they are already trying to keep us out. Over the years I've got to know a few and I have watched their demeanor change towards us. SO PLEASE...respect the land and the owners.
Only when desperate
Every campsite within an hour range of Big Sur was full, and it was getting dark so we opted for this road. It is the only road where dispersed camping is allowed but beware: it is narrow, steep, unmaintained, and surrounded by cliffs. If you happen upon a pull out that is not occupied, does not have a private property sign, and is somewhat flat, then it works as a spot to sleep that feels like you’re on the edge of the world.
Too crowded on weekends
Practically camping on top of each other. Going up or down that road is only for 4x4 and keep an eye out for crazy drivers. One lane road in many spots. NO CAMPFIRES ALLOWED IN SUMMER. Check conditions.
