Rollways Campground is located 7 miles from Hale, Michigan along the beautiful AuSable River. The site was built in 1909 as one of the first campgrounds established in Huron National Forest. The space is small and secluded and features an observation area, picnic grounds and log shelter..
The facility is located just off the River Road National Scenic Byway in northeast Lower Michigan. The byway showcases incredible views of the AuSable River Valley.
Recreation
Hike on the accessible trail that connects the campground and picnic area to Westgate Scenic Overlook. Bring binoculars and a camera to take advantage of the epic view.
The same hiking path passes a stairway leading down to the river where visitors can fish and wade.
Facilities
The campground offers 19 pull-through campsites with picnic tables, a lantern post, grills, tent pads and campfire rings. At the picnic area, a log shelter, picnic tables and grills are available.
Vault toilets and drinking water spigots are dispersed throughout the campground and all roads and camping spurs are paved.
Natural Features
Rollways is perched on a high bluff overlooking Loud Dam Pond on the AuSable River. The river flows from west to east for 138 miles until it reaches the great Lake Huron.

We tented this past weekend at Rollways and it was great! The sites were big. We brought our own kayaks and spent the day at on loud lake which was about a 15 min drive away. There were plenty of vault toilets which were very clean and water stations. Some sites were reservable and some were first come first serve. There were two or three sites that’s were close to the water which looked most preferable.
We come here every summer for our annual Au Sable kayak trip! The campground is nice and clean with a good amount of space between sites. What’s really awesome about this place is if you pay a little extra, they will provide dropoff and pickup of both your party and all your kayaks to the appropriate points so you don’t have to deal with transporting everything yourself. This comes in handy especially at the end of the kayak trip when you have to walk up a HUGE staircase, which is absolute hell with a kayak! They will drag your kayaks back with a boat and even drop them off at your campsites that night or the next morning and it is definitely worth every penny!
This is one of my favorite campgrounds in Michigan. The sites are big, most are well shaded. There is a steep but walkable trail down to the ausable river, there is also some nice walking trails to various view points. Vault toilets are usually clean. There is usually a camp host. Right across the street from Rollaways Canoe Rental, so you can walk back to your site after a day on the river.
