Kankakee River State Park Equestrian Campground offers specialized facilities for horseback riders near Burnham, Illinois. The campground sits on terrain that transitions between prairie and woodland ecosystems, providing varied landscapes for trail riding. During summer months, temperatures typically range from 70-90°F with humidity levels reaching 70-80%, making early morning rides most comfortable for both horses and riders.
What to do
Trail riding along the river: The equestrian trail system connects with the park's main trail network, allowing riders to explore wooded ravines and riverside paths. "The area is well kept, clean, and well managed. I have frequented this park because it offers a lot of activities from primitive camping, RV parking, fishing, hiking, biking, backpacking, etc. They're are some rock cliffs that are suspended over the Kankakee river and also over a creek that feeds it," notes Andrea F. from Potowatomi Campground — Kankakee River State Park.
Explore historical sites: Several historical markers and remnants can be found throughout the park's riding trails. "This site is near a small cemetery that has tombstones that are hundreds of years old," shares Phillip L., adding context to the area's rich cultural heritage.
Fishing opportunities: When not riding, visitors can access fishing spots along the Kankakee River. The river contains smallmouth bass, northern pike, and walleye. "The river was nice to visit and we were able to take the kids to some knee deep water to play (swimming is NOT allowed in the river)," reports Linda N. from Potowatomi Campground.
What campers like
Spacious camping layout: The equestrian camping area provides ample room for horse trailers with space between sites. "We had four sites on Osage loop for tent camping. Two were very small (14&15), and little grass for tent setup, fine for RV or trailer campers. They were private with brush between sites. 16&17 were amazing for tents!! Open, tall trees for our tight rope and hammocks and shade," describes Shannon H. about nearby loops at Kankakee River State Park.
Clean facilities: The shower house and bathroom facilities receive regular maintenance. "The shower house was good. We went during July 4th so it was busy (the toilet paper was completely out when I stopped by and it looked like some kids had a water balloon fight in there) but the team came out to clean up promptly," notes Linda N.
Natural setting: The campground offers a peaceful atmosphere with natural surroundings. "I wish we were able to stay longer than one day! I loved this spot! We loved riding our bikes along the river and just being away from the hustle and bustle," shares Jacqueline F., highlighting the tranquility that attracts many equestrian campers to the area.
What you should know
Limited hookups and amenities: The equestrian campground does not offer electrical hookups. "Not many amenities other than showers, toilets and hookups, but it just adds to the appeal here. A great spot to get away and experience some silence and solitude!" explains Jacqueline F. from Leisure Lake Resort.
Weekend noise considerations: Weekends can bring more campers and increased noise levels. "The only complaint is the noise level after 10pm. The quiet time was not strictly enforced. It could be we are there on a Saturday night," observes Ray S.
Seasonal water conditions: During heavy rainfall, trail conditions can deteriorate and river levels rise. "It rained a ton during our trip so we didn't explore much, but would definitely recommend for a simple camping trip where you want flushable toilets, showers, and some electricity," notes Emma H.
Tips for camping with families
Educational opportunities: Visit the nature center with children for hands-on wildlife experiences. "We did have a really awesome time at the main office/nature center, where my kiddos got to feed and hold a variety of reptiles!" shares Linda N. from Kankakee River State Park.
Playgrounds and recreation: Multiple playgrounds are available, though sun exposure can be a factor. "Playgrounds are unfortunately exposed so it was not suitable for the 100 degree days we had," warns Linda N.
Site selection for family comfort: Choose sites with adequate space and shade. "Our site was perfect with trees to hang a hammock on and for the kids to run around," recommends Linda N., providing insight into family-friendly spots.
Tips from RVers
Campsite selection: Some sites work better for RVs than others. "Biggest spaces. Can add that 13, 6, 5, 4 Osage are good RV but not good tent," advises Shannon H. about the main campground at Kankakee River State Park.
Water quality considerations: Water quality can vary throughout the season. "Water quality has been very bad. On one occasion, our pet had stomach issues after drinking tap water, which was concerning," reports Iryna R. about nearby facilities, suggesting visitors bring additional water filtration.
Check-in process: Arrival procedures are straightforward for horse owners. "When we checked in with the host, there were bundles of firewood for $8 (either cash or cash app)," notes Emma H., describing the check-in process that equestrian campers can also expect.
