Wolf Den Campground, near Pomfret Center, Connecticut, is a fantastic spot for families and outdoor lovers alike. With spacious sites that come equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, it’s perfect for roasting marshmallows and sharing stories under the stars.

The campground offers clean facilities, including bathrooms and showers, which visitors appreciate after a day of hiking or playing. One camper noted, “Bathrooms were clean and staff were friendly,” highlighting the welcoming atmosphere you can expect here. 

For those eager to explore, you’ll find a network of hiking trails nearby, including paths suitable for all skill levels. There’s also a small playground for the kids and a swimming pond to cool off in during the warmer months. Just be aware that pets aren’t allowed, so leave your furry friends at home.

While some sites may lack shade, many campers enjoyed the open areas for stargazing at night. If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat with plenty of activities, Wolf Den Campground is a great choice for your next adventure.

Mashamoquet Brook State Park boasts both impressive geological features and an interesting trail system that provides access to all the areas and features of the park. The most famous park feature is the Wolf Den, into which Israel Putman, later a Major General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary war, crept one night in 1742, to shoot a wolf that had preyed upon local sheep and poultry. Near the Den are the Table Rock and Indian chair stone formations. The park's entrance was once the site of a cider mill, grist mill and wagon shop. The old grist mill is maintained as a museum by the Pomfret Historical Society, whose members provide interpretation for interested visitors.

Campgrounds contains 53 sites divided into two loops. The Wolf Den Field loop has 35 sites numbered 1 through 35 in mostly open campsites with flush toilets, showers, drinking water, paved site pads and dumping station. The Mashamoquet loop has 18 sites numbered 41 through 60 (no sites #47 and 58) with wooded campsites with centrally located portable toilets. **The Mashamoquet Campground does not have running water or showers**.

 In an effort to protect Connecticut's forests from the introduction and spread of destructive insect pests - in particular the emerald ash borer and Asian long-horned beetle - the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is taking the following action:  
 It is PROHIBITED to transport firewood into State Parks Campgrounds and prohibited to transport firewood from out of state. <u>Firewood is available for purchase at the Camp Office for $5 a bundle and fire starters are available for $1. </u>  
  
 The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection greatly appreciates the public's assistance in helping to protect the state's natural resources and apologizes for any inconvenience this initiative may cause.  
  
 The maximum length of stay is fourteen consecutive days, and reservations can total no more than twenty-one days in the aggregate in any calendar year, pursuant to state law (CGS 23-16a).

Wolf Den Campground — Mashamoquet Brook State Park

Son and I stayed from Friday to Sunday. Easy to find the camp and the plot, well marked. Very nice sized lots. Large open areas for kids and adults to play during day and star gaze at night. Close to a small walking path and a larger intermediate hiking trail. Bathrooms were clean and staff were friendly. Would definitely stay again. 

Great place to camp

Stayed here on a Tuesday night right after hurricane Henri. The park was completely cleaned up from any damage or debris, all in great shape. No other campers here when we arrived, so totally silent. No road noise. Most sites are relatively short level pads, with little or no shade, but very pleasant. We picked site 33 for the best shade and longer pad. Wished we had time to check out the hiking trails accessible from the campground.

Nice overnight spot

This small state park campground offers basic campsites with running water and showers, open Memorial Day to Columbus Day.  This is NOT _Wolf's Den Family Campground_ in E. Haddam, CT. Also, be aware there are 2 campgrounds at this State Park; the other one, Mashamoquet Brook, does not offer running water/showers, so if you want these amenities, be sure to select a campsite 1-35.

  

There's a small playground in the middle of the loop, a number of hiking trails throughout the park along with a few geocaches (download details for offline use a phone connection is spotty), a swimming pond, and a small brook with an old mill and blacksmith shop that is sometimes open on weekends for tours. It's a nice place to explore and have a picnic. In 2020 with Covid, there were restrictions on visitors to the campground, reservations required, and swimming was not allowed. 

  

The parking pads are paved and a few have overhanging branches, but the trees provide  separation and some shade on largely open sites that tend to open up toward the back with open areas for pitching tents. Sites have fire rings with grills and picnic tables. Site 20 is the only one with electric. The ones toward the back of the loop back up toward the woods and give you some more privacy. 

  

They don't allow hammocks in the trees or pets. For some reason, silly string also makes the list of prohibitions.
