Mid Hills Campground, near Barstow, California, is a fantastic spot for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This campground offers a peaceful atmosphere with designated sites that come equipped with fire pits and picnic tables, perfect for enjoying a meal or roasting marshmallows under the stars.

Visitors rave about the stunning sunrises and sunsets, with many noting the breathtaking views from various sites. The campground is a bit remote, which adds to its charm, and while it lacks running water, the clean pit toilets are a plus. As one camper put it, “Privacy, fire rings, standing grills, table, but most importantly quiet.”

For outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of hiking opportunities nearby, including trails that lead to unique geological features like lava tubes and sand dunes. Just a short drive away, you can explore the beauty of the Mojave National Preserve, making it an ideal base for adventure. 

While some campers mentioned that the access road can be a bit rough, most found it manageable with a standard vehicle. If you’re looking for a quiet retreat with stunning natural beauty, Mid Hills Campground is definitely worth a visit.

The Hackberry Fire swept through the Mid Hills area in June 2005, burning much of the vegetation. About half of the 26 campsites were left unburned and remain surrounded by pinyon pine and juniper trees. At 5,600 feet in elevation, Mid Hills is much cooler than the desert floor below. The access road is unpaved and somewhat steep and is therefore not recommended for large motorhomes or trailers. Water is not available at this campground.
