Great place to camp and relax

A great campground with an equally awesome campground manager. Pam, our gracious host and CG manager was friendly, helpful and very accommodating. On arrival she greeted us and led us to our very nice and well kept campsite. A beautiful mountain stream flows around the campground on one side and mountains with high steep cliffs on the other. A great place to camp, hike, fish, practice your photographic skills or just sit, relax and take in the view. Gooney Creek Campground is an excellent place to tent camp or camp in smaller RVs. Rigs longer than 25 feet, most likely will not fit. I highly recommend Gooney Creek Campground and we look forward to our next visit and stay.

Ok for a quickie

Not so bad for a quick stop, fairly spread out spaces, the highway noise and bathrooms would be the big down side. But there was WiFi which was great considering the area in the mountains.

Wonderful spot

Last minute weekend trip to Shenandoah, didn’t have a reservation but they were able to put us in a beautiful spot at the back of the campground. The picnic table and fire pit at each campsite was fantastic, and Pam was great and very helpful. The outhouses could use some maintenance but there are flush toilets and running water at the front of the camp ground. The creek flowing along the campsite was gorgeous and it was great listening to the running water at night. Would definitely return!

Would stay here again

We had a brief stay, one short night before driving through Shenandoah. Pam, the campground host was extremely accommodating! I communicated with her prior to our arrival and although we were coming on a busy weekend (she mentioned it was Homesteaders weekend, October 11, 2019), she assured us she could make a spot for us. It was a little challenging to find the campground as it’s located partially under a highway overpass. Pam held her promise and we had a tent site with plenty of room to set up and park. Bathrooms were clean. Wood was provided in wheel barrows so no heavy lugging required. We left before sunrise the next morning, so we didn’t get a chance to really explore, however we agreed we would stay again if in the area.

Great place

Stayed for a night back in October and loved it. Originally planned on staying at one of the shenandoah campsites but nothing was available so in desperation I called this one the day before our trip. Pam was super sweet and helpful. She had no openings at that time but told me to call back first thing in the morning because she might have a cancelation. Sure enough she got us in. As we pulled into the property I was a little leary due to the check-in area where the family lives and the fact that the highway overpass goes across one end of the property, but once we pulled into our spot and got settled in it was fantastic. Located right on the bank of the creek you sleep with the sound of the babbling water. Spaces aren't very big but big enough that we didn't feel like we were on top of our neighbors. To sum it up, this is a great little place that is sort of a hidden gem. At first look you might keep driving but I assure you, you'll be missing something great.

Annothaaaa one

Pam’s got jokes! I believe she is the owner or maybe just the long term host. Either way awesome lady and made us laugh. I have stayed here a couple times.

Lots of cool little camps along the creek. Group site is secluded, and spacious.

Bathrooms are clean. Water is so hot it hurts. Laundry area. Large sink for dishes. Even a little free library.

The “clutter” others mention is irrelevant to the camp. Seems to just be in the private areas.

Cute little campground with a swimming hole!

Multiple campsites right along the creek. Hike up a trail or up through the creek itself to a swimming hole only accessible to campers. Saw some decent sized fish swimming around in there. Hike even further up through the creek and there’s a second swimming area, a little shallower but nice and secluded. Only downside is the noise from the highway, which we could hear from our site (17) but maybe wouldn’t be as noisy if you were in one of the further campgrounds (closer to the swimming hole).

It will do in a pinch

Visited recently for a weekend. Yes, there is a bridge that goes over the front of the campground. I was further back and never really heard much from it. The sound of the creek muffled much of the noise. The sites are a bit tight but have a table and fire pit. Creekside preferable. The bathroom was basic with a shower. Nothing fancy but gets job done. Close to local attractions and not too expensive. Owner is helpful and nice. Despite seeing children there, I think campground perhaps better suited for adults.

Primitive Camping

Small family-run campground. No frills, very country. Location is good if you’re putting in on the river. Pam helped us out and was very kind. There’s a swingset and basketball hoop for the kids, a small camp store, and a bathhouse with hot showers. The creekside sites are primitive and have fire rings and picnic tables. There are also electric/water sites. Swim and fish in the creek. Pet-friendly.

The campground sits on Gooney Creek which flows into the Shenandoah River. You’re not far from the public boat launch if you need to put in (it’s walkable). We couldn’t get a parking spot at the boat launch because it was packed (plus there was limited parking due to rain, so it was very muddy). We put in on the river upstream/south of the campground and after our float we hopped out at the launch and walked to get our car to come pick up the boats.

We actually didn’t stay

We had a much different experience than other campers. Sounded like it was going to be a good time, however when we got there we were offered “the best spot”...and it would be $100. It was down by the river, directly under the overpass. We were looking for a quick night to tent out with the kids. This wasn’t the type of place we were looking for. We unfortunately just drove away. No way I’d pay $100 for a campsite, especially under an overpass. No thanks.

Super Rad Spot

We stayed here for a night - I was meeting up with family so they were able to accommodate us by making sure we had a big enough spot for two cars. PLUS she goes out of her way to make sure all the kids/families are next to each other. Really cute community camping feeling. Small campground but it was still quite with every site filled. Will totally come back!

Great little campground

Wonderful little spot. Pam was very accommodating and nice! Most of the spots pull up near the creek and have a picnic table and fire pit with a grill.

Sweetest owner ever!

On a whim we decided to try this campground. We are tent campers and we’re looking for a place close to Shenandoah to ride our motorcycles. This was 3 miles from the north entrance to the park, perfect. Making a reservation was easy, we arrived and had the loveliest conversation with Pam, she is such a gem!! We got a spot right next to the creek, bought some firewood from Pam for $10, which gave you a small wheelbarrow full. You can get a better deal elsewhere but we were happy to support Pam. The campground wasn’t exceptionally beautiful, the bathrooms and shower are rustic. Paint peeling and very makeshift but who cares. The water was hot and the bathroom facility has gorgeous paintings all over it. The grounds were relatively empty when we stayed and we had no issues w anything. Rained all night, we didn’t care, rain and the creek sounded awesome. Without hesitation I would stay here again, you don’t meet special souls like Pam very often. Give her your business. Oh and watch out for the pet cat, he likes the road down to the campsite. His name is Puppycat.

Beautiul cozy campsite

Gooney’s is run by a lovely woman named Pam. She went out of her way to make our camping trip a success. we landed the prime spot all the way at the back of the campsite, nearest to the swimming hole. The site is located near a highway, so getting a spot in the back is ideal. It is minutes from the Shenandoah State Park and multiple canoeing and tubing companies. So if you are looking for any form out outdoor fun, this spot is in a great location. each site came with a fire pit and cooking grates, as well as trash bins. Will definitely visit again!
