Nearly everything about Lake McConaughy is big. At 30,000 surface acres, it is Nebraska’s largest reservoir, its dam is among the largest of its type in the world and its fish grow to trophy proportions, accounting for several state records. Even its nickname, “Big Mac,” reflects its size.
Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area is known to most Nebraskans and residents of neighboring states as a great place for outdoor recreation. Lake Mac’s white-sand beaches and clear waters are a favorite with campers, boaters, windsurfers, swimmers, water skiers, picnickers, scuba divers, hunters, anglers, and others seeking outdoor fun.

Clean, quiet, great host
Bathhouse was clean and well kept, the quiet hours are kept well, and the host is great- brought suckers and popsicles for our kids!
Beautiful white sand beach
My husband and I pulled up to this campground hoping for a walk up site, as we didn’t have a reservation. We were able to find a primitive spot near some beautiful cedar and cotton trees that even had a walking path to the beach and water. The bathrooms and showers were not the newest or cleanest and there is a train track with trains that went through throughout the day and night. Otherwise, beautiful campground and it wasn’t very busy during the week.
Nice (Cedar View Campground)

Incredible campsite!
We stopped overnight on our way home because we were several hours behind schedule on our trip, and glad that we did! This place is a gem. Very impressed with this campsite, clean sites, helpful host, beautiful WHITE sand beaches and clear water. We are going back again next week because we enjoyed it so much!
Sandy Sandy Beaches, great campsites
This is one of our favorite campsites in the country. On a tall cliff, lake breeze blowing through the popup window, sandy beach that is as big as the panhandle itself (these are the sandhills of Nebraska). My 'Dyrt' profile picture is of our site at Cedar Vue.
Ogallala was a raunchy western town and has q boot hill full of cutthroats and cowboys.
The lake is huge. one of the few man-made lakes that are visible from outer space. Nice wide open country side all around with much wildlife to see. If you are a bird watcher, head north to crescent lake and see the burrowing owls, long billied curlew, or a vast amount of other birds. The fishing is renowned.
Warm showers, flush toilets, full hookups (though we prefer the scenery of our primitive site). Nice visitor center at the dam

Nice campground..close to the beach
We camped here in Mid-July 2018. We were originally going to camp on the beach, closer to the dam and I'm happy we didn't. These were nice sized sites and we had a great spot a few steps from the beginning of the beach. Camp host was very personable. Bathroom could be a little cleaner but not the worst one I've ever seen.
