Update to area rules
We have camped here a few times over the past few years, however going back for the first time this year (June) we figured out the rules have changed and it doesn't seem to be all worked out yet. This is no longer a fully dispersed and free area. Some site are reservable and some are first come. The fee sign is not very helpful as it didn't have detail on the cost yet, so recommend googling before you go.
This is a convenient area to get to from Denver and the road is easy for most vehicles. Lots of ATVs around so be prepared for some noisy morning traffic.

No Longer a Free spot
My family and I have camped here at various sites many times over the years. We were surprised to see it is now a fee area, at $25.00 a night (more depending on vehicle#). Considering we paid to camp, the facilities were as gross as ever. I don't think we will be returning.
Fun and loud
Fun place to camp lots of sites and pretty trails, however this is known for its off-road ATV riders. If you're staying for a night or you're ATV for the weekend this is your spot. Don't bring the family if you plan on having a quiet weekend. Pack on and pack out, no bathrooms. Just one public one along the road somewhere. You're better off digging a hole.
Awesome group campsites
On Rampart Range Road at mile marker 20 and 21 are some fascinating campsites suitable for a group. Every time I went camping there with a group we would set up a large sound and lighting system and have parties until 2am. This far down the road there wasn’t any fee to camp but there weren’t any toilets, no water, and no trash bins.

pretty campsite, beware of near-constant ATV noise
We grabbed a site here one night at the last minute - had no problem finding a space, but quickly realized that the main appeal of this area is the ATV trails. they constantly whizzed by our site until dark, and started up again at sunrise. we were only staying for a quick night as a stopover so it wasn’t a huge deal - just FYI. sites were good sized and spread apart; sadly there was a lot of trash left behind at our site. wish people had more of a conscience when it came to that :( all in all, nice spot with pretty views and enough trees to string up hammocks.
A Dad and his three kids
Great area with plenty of opportunity to get lost. The reservoir is beautiful. Dispersed camping is plentiful. Main road is mellow but offshoots offer adventure. Just stay away from the dirt bike scene unless that’s your thing.

Great during the week- way too crowded on the weekend
We came up Sunday and drove around for an hour trying to find a spot. It was so busy with campers and there were dirt bikers everywhere! Sunday evening it cleared up and we were the only ones there mon-tues! I loved the spot we found, super peaceful and secluded. Not super close to town and about a 30 min drive to deckers where we went tubing!
Top of the world Ma!!
My 9 yr old son and I have been “jeeping” around Colorado for about 8 months now. We make it a point to wake up to a different view every day. We discovered Rampart range rd through the grapevine and decided to give it a shot. Man oh man was it worth it! Surprisingly, given the current covid-19 hysteria and the locations close proximity to the springs, we expected it to be awash with modern day “prospectors” looking for a place to roll out their “social distancing” plan. There were none! We had a peaceful quiet night and crisp sunny morning sans disturbance. The road to the sites is pretty washboarded out but affords access your the sites for both 4x4’s and grocery getters alike, RV campers may not be able to find a level, accessible site at this time of year (Mid-March) as the main roads are maintained but the pull offs don’t appear to be. We definitely recommend it for soloists, couples, tent campers, Jeep/van campers or even hammock campers as there are plenty of trees to hang from.
Best free place
Very clean very quiet cant find a spot every time and can get very crowded on weekends but on week days very quiet
Busy and Covered in Bullet Casings
We were actually surprised when we found a quiet spot out here. We tried to turn into a lot of the turn offs and there were bullet casings all over the ground. There are signs everywhere that say "DO NOT SHOOT THE TREES" and we laughed at it but then we kept going and noticed that the reason why those signs were there were because there were clear cuts of trees just shot down and the casings were left on the ground.
We spent a good hour cleaning up our site before setting up camp. We carried out a large trash bag of bullet casings.
It was a beautiful view of Pikes Peak and it is a great easy place to get away from the hustle of the city. We found a safe spot for us to go shooting clays the next day and we had a blast just releasing some energy. We did clean up all of our trash as we went. Leave no trace!

One of our favorites!!
My family and I LOVE this area. It is close to Denver, yet out of town and in the mountains. It is first come first serve so you need to try to get up there early to get a spot on weekends. The spots have tons of space for you and friends. If you have ATV's you really need to discover this area. Drawbacks are the ATV noise during the day (and it starts pretty early). But if you have toys to drive on the trails you will fall in love with this place. Also bathrooms are kinda sparse, and there is a lot of dust. But despite the dust and noise we truly love our weekends up here.
Big OHV camping area
This area is geared towards OHV enthusiasts. There are a number of designated campsites off Rampart Range Road and it feels like the road just keeps on going. The sites are spacious and pretty isolated from other campers but the main road is surprisingly busy and you are close to the OHV trail system. Forrest service campground with no amenities (water, sewer, etc) but there are pit toilets at some of the trailheads.
We stayed here for one night - it was the Thursday before Labor day and the area was busy with a lot of campers probably setting up for the weekend.
