We enjoyed our 2 nights here and would stay again next time we are in Taos. Easy access to all the activities in the area. Grounds and bathrooms were very clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. In late Sep it was still busy and full, but it was quiet within the RV park. We had a full hookup site and all services worked as expected. Wifi was available, with repeaters around the park. Mobile service was solid. The showers worked well and were clean. The only negative was the noise from the adjacent streets with what sounded like street racing, finally quieting down around 1AM.
Very small, but quiet and secluded primitive campground. Several sites appear to be overgrown or have too much debris to be usable. There are a couple sites that could fit a small trailer. All are suitable for tents or a van. The bathroom is still out of order. Mobile coverage was spotty, worked better if you went up to the nearby trailhead. The road up to the campground is in good shape, 4x4 not required. Overall traffic was very low. There was a little bit of firewood cutting nearby, with a few trucks making multiple trips. A few families were up on Sat for picnics. UTVs were minimal. There are a few dispersed options in the area.
We spent a few nights in the dispersed area near Hopewell . We rolled in at 5 and had plenty of sites to choose from. We chose one of the lower areas, with one large open space surrounded by smaller sites. There were many more up the road, and there was constant traffic headed uphill until about 9PM. Once the traffic stopped it was very quiet, only the cattle calling through the trees. It rained for several hours and our spot stayed solid. Some offshoot roads were rutted out. The main road had minimal rocks and holes, didn't get very muddy. TMobile\Google mobile service worked well enough. Verizon did not work.
We have stayed on the Pedernal loop multiple times and it has always been great. The sites are well laid out, with plenty of room between neighbors. Access to the campground is restricted (closed 10pm-6am), so it is always quiet, with just those camping driving around. Rangers and sheriff patrolled a few times. Camp hosts were very friendly and helpful. All the grounds are clean and well maintained, trash cans at every site. The electrical pillar for our site was new and worked perfectly. Water also worked with no issues. Shower house is clean and well maintained. Access to a few trails, but water access requires a bit of a drive. Amazing views.
We spent one night here while passing through. We had a reservation in advance, arrived just before they closed, zero issues getting checked in. The place was strangely empty, only a handful of sites taken. Our site was clean and had great shade. Facilities were clean and functional. Zero complaints.
This dispersed area has plenty of options, but it does fill up quickly on weekends. There is constant traffic 24x7 to the multiple trailheads and campgrounds farther up the road. Select a spot away from the road or you will be subjected to traffic all night long. We will not stay in this area of Halfmoon again… perhaps farther up the road past the 14er trailheads.
Stayed here one night while bikepacking the Tour Divide. A few of us stopped here late at night and we had the place to ourselves. Not much here, just a vault toilet and lots of parking. Multiple fire rings. No drinking water, but water is easily filtered from the adjacent creek. Very quiet, just the sound of the rushing water.
Stayed here one night while bikepacking on the Tour Divide route. Multiple sites were open and the camp hosts were very friendly. They ensured I knew about the potential for bears and answered a few questions about the area. Each site had a bear box. There was a small herd of horses roaming with bells to deter the bears. I was able to get food at the nearby lodge. Very quiet, away from the traffic of the national park. Great nights sleep and beautiful morning.
We stayed at this location for 2 nights, hiking up from Echo Lake. There are multiple established camping areas with enough space for a few tents. Accessing the lake for water was difficult due to willows and mud. We eventually found a stream flowing down to the lake that was easily accessible from the primary trail. We got in around noon and had our pick of sites, but it was full by evening. Steady foot traffic on the trail. Very quiet at night. No issues with wildlife.
We spent several nights here as we hiked the multiple 14ers. We took the train from Durango, which was an easy enough process getting in and out. The hike up was not bad at all. Multiple established camping areas with great shade. Plentiful water. Zero mobile coverage. No issues with bears, but the goats were very persistent.
We have camped in this area multiple times and have always had a great stay. Immediate access to Colorado Trail, cycling, hiking, and Twin Lakes activities. The road can get rough, and is narrow in one spot. Accessible with smaller trailers. Larger RVs should stick to areas nearer the dam before the road narrows into the trees. This area is very crowded on summer weekends, so get there early for the best spots. Lots of dust from the passing vehicles. Decent mobile coverage. Quiet at night.
We have camped in this area multiple times and have always had a great stay. Immediate access to Mt Elbert, Colorado Trail, cycling, and Twin Lakes activities. Sites vary in size and some are further down the chunky gravel road. Accessible with a small trailer, but larger RVs should stick to the Forebay or down by the lakes. Area can get very crowded on summer weekends, so get there early for the best spots. Decent mobile coverage. Quiet at night for the most part, but a few early morning arrivals for Elbert hiking.
Very clean and well maintained. Staff were very friendly. No shade for the trailer, but the covered picnic table was good. Electric hookup worked. Water was off due to water system maintenance. We were able to fill up at the campground below the dam. Quiet at night, just some road noise from the highway. The lake is great with easy access for kayaking at the boat ramp. We would stay here again.
Clean and well maintained campground. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Our site was well spaced from our neighbors, but other areas were fairly dense. Electric hookup worked, but no water at the site, and "public water" in the area was a broken water fountain. We filled up at the dump station. Shower house was close, only open 6am to 10pm, pay showers minimum $2. Excessive road noise during the day, it did quiet down each night. If we stay here again we will stay nearer to the entrance or get a cabin.
