We have been coming here since the mid 1990s… my Father-in-law came up here back in the 1940s… it hasn't changed.
If you are a camper that likes to party and play loud music, this is NOT the place for you. This pristine environment is a place to re-join with nature, and enjoy the fresh air. It is one of the highest campsites you can visit. At 10,000 feet above sea level, you need to acclimate before you start hiking.
Fishing: Wonderful
Camping: Wonderful
Hiking: Wonderful… you can hike Little Lakes Valley in one day, and it is a site to see.
Spotting Bears: well… this is just what happens in the high country. There are bear boxes provided (do NOT leave food in tents or cars).
We needed a quick overnight spot to hookup. It was where we needed to stop and we got through the night and showered and left.
This was not our planned destination, but due to vehicle problems, we ended up here for 5 nights. Even though we didn’t have reservations, they accommodated us with overflow spots. Thank goodness for the kindness of the host!
While this campground was on a lake, it was also dusty due to the sand. (I prefer mountain trees and forest). But access to the water was easy and we had fun fishing and kayaking
We can here in September and camped in a small tent. The day we arrived it was fairly windy, so the tent was not that pleasant, but the view and the animal live that was ever present was a delight.
While I camped many times as a kid, my first adult camping was at Big Lake. What a great place to learn to camp. Beautiful scenery, quiet, a big lake, fishing, and all away from civilization.
This is a beautiful campground. At the end of the road. Parking is along a ridge, and tent camping is down the hill. RV camping has no hookups, but plenty of space.
