Camping and fishing

This park offers some excellent trout fishing in MO. The camp site we stayed in was for tents only. It was right on the stream. My son and I was able to buy our trout tags the night before fishing and then get up early in the next morning and walk 50 feet to go fishing. The shower house has the hottest water I've ever had at a state park. It made for a steamy shower on the cold nights.

Camping within the trees

I like this camp site because you are within the trees the whole time. It is tent camping only. Where we camped, the ground was covered in moss. That made for very soft sleeping, except for the few large rocks spread over the area. We had room for two portable canopies and about 35 cub scouts and family members.

Much to do

We stayed in the group use area with our Cub Scout Pack. There was plenty of room for all of our tents and portable canopies. We hiked the 1000 step trail. Most of the campers did fine but those who were not use to hiking did struggle a bit. If you are use to hiking, then this trail should not be any problem for you.

Quick getaway from the city

The campground is not very large. Most of the sites are small. This works well for me since I like to talk and meet other campers. However, if you prefer some space while camping, this one may not be for you. The park has a lot to offer. The trails are not too long but can be challenging for small kids or folks that are not used to hiking.

My favorite State Park

Growing up near here, this was the state park that my family always went to. Forty some years later, it is still my favorite park in Missouri. I enjoy camping here with my family and friends. We also bring our Cub Scout pack here to camp. This park also has some history with my family. If you drive or camp in the main loop, you will notice several Cottonwood trees. Those trees were planted by the CCC in the 1930's. My grandpa and my older uncles helped to plant the trees. It's a special place for me.
