I got out here around 7:30 and got the first one I could find, there’s a bunch of roads so it’s kind of a pick your own adventure deal. ended up about 200 yards from the next site but that didn’t bother me. Gorgeous views of Gunnison! Bathrooms and trash cans at the entrance, if you come in by the airport it’s a steep bumpy road, high clearance recommended.
I saw this area on a couple apps and didn’t get out here until 7:30 on a Friday so I just went with the first area I got to- a picnic area about halfway between 550 and the campground. A couple other people already set up here but plenty of space for someone just sleeping in her truck. There’s a handful of picnic tables but only one you can park right next to. They have shelters over each table if you’re a hammocker but given that it’s on the edge of a canyon it’s very windy. I also read some reviews about how washboarded the road is- it’s hardly bumpy. Not sure about when it’s wet but anyone should be able to get back here when it’s dry. Absolutely stunning, though.
I got here around 9 pm expecting the place to be full but I was the only one there. No bathroom, two picnic tables. Beautiful sunset coming in from I-40, woke up to a gorgeous sunrise over the canyon. It was very windy, which kept me up. Could hear a couple of cars passing by the road below, only one car came in when I was there around 2:30 am and they left shortly after.
Got here around 1700 and had to squeeze in between 20-25 other vehicles. Trash everywhere, people parked right on the water’s edge, and when I started hiking away from the water to dump my dish water it only took about five steps to reach a couple dozen non-buried piles of poop. But the site itself is very pretty.
Right on the Snake River. On the loop there’s half a dozen spots (no established fire rings, probably best for car camping) and I saw some people camped on the beach but I also saw early morning fishermen that would probably be angry if the beach was covered in campers, so just respect the multiple uses. Bring bug spray! Had verizon service.
Not a lot of other campers, great views, right in the monument. (Must pay entrance fee or arrive after 5)
No significant views, I came after a big rain so towards the end of the site part of the road it got pretty muddy.
Recommend getting there during the daylight- I got there after dark and accidentally parked in someone’s site with them when there was an empty one next to me. LONG drive out there in washboarded roads.
Beautiful view of the mountains, only three other campers and I can only see one of them across the field. Porta potty at entrance to road in state park.
