We visited during the off season, November. It was fairly empty, which was nice. The biggest, and really only complaint, is that the sites were pretty un-level for being paved. The bathhouse was very niceā¦ and I think the floors may have been heated?
We stayed at a full hookup site, which is unusual for us, but the facilities were great.
The road into the campground was steep and winding. We almost saw a van towing a large trailer tip. It was a bit scary. Make sure you watch your turns on the way in.
The best part was the location!!!! The entrance was right next to the entrance to Old Man's cave, which was epic.
Also, there was a small area to the east that had an interpretive trail that ended with a large cage with some birds of prey, it was pretty great.
Campground is adequate. Close to Michigan Adventure is the best quality. A fine beach, small spots, clean bathhouse, nice store, firewood and ice for sale. Very close to the highway. So there is a lot of road noise.
A safe place to stop for the night. Electricity with a dump station and water available. Nice to have a designated spot to pull off while traveling.
The drive in sites near the whirlpool are my favorite sites in the Lower Penninsula. Quiet and very private. They only have a fire ring, no picnic tables or bathrooms. Large, wide open sites overlooking the Ausable River. We can at site 101 every year and will continue to do so for a long time.
Spacious, pit toilets, no dump. The lake looks nice, but the campground is very buggy. So many mosquitos it is hard to sit outside. Many ORV trails, but they are also very loud.
Great location, right on lake Huron. Close to Alpena and the dinosaur park. Quiet with moderately large sites.
Great location, pretty standard park with standard amenities. Right on lake Michigan and very close to Michigan Adventure.
Great for travel, feels safe. Electric hookups, dump and water on site. Pull-through.
Small sites, oddly set up. Our site was an not level cement pad, then a slippery slope down to our fire pit. No cell reception. The lake was very full of algae, no swimming.
Campsites are pretty close to each other. In the rustic area a group plugged their extension cord into the bathouse and ran it to their site. Multiple generators running all night long. We moved to the electric side and our neighbors were about 25 feet away and the site flooded in the rainā¦ but, it was close to the islands and cedar point.
Very much the quintessential RV park. Overpriced, but you are really paying to be close to the amusement park.
Full hookups. Nice pool, close to the beach. Clean bathrooms and showers. Fully stocked store. Close to neighbors, but some well-placed shrubbery makes it feel private.
Camping here allows an hour early into the park.
We camp here with family, and it is perfect for that. We prefer the wagon wheel sites at the back of the park, so we can park our campers in a large circle. There is a pool and a beach, a small store, putt putt, Kayaks. Not my favorite type of camping, but great for a family.
Large sites on an awesome place to fish and kayak.
It's a shame that the experience was ruined by loud and rowdy campers. They shot fireworks off well into the morningā¦ played loud music and were screaming.
Great location, right in the porcupine mountains. Nice trails to 2 large waterfalls, a staircase to the rocky shores of Lake superior. Just a quick drive to Lake of the Clouds. Be warned that half of the campground allows Generators.
A nice mix of FCFS spots and reservable ones. Large, rustic spots with a dump station and potable water available. Vault toilets.
The beach is exceptional, covered in glass from the old smelting furnace that used to be there. Close to pictured rocks and Marquette.
This place is breathtaking. The road to get here is sketchy at best, make sure you have everything you need before you get thereā¦. but it is worth it. A walking suspension bridge is over the Two Hearted River leads to a rocky beach with some of the most epic sunsets you will ever see. The only drawback- this place is POPULARā¦ so finding a site can be iffy at best.
Location is greatā¦ when in town, you should visit the Dancing Crane Coffee shop. It is awesome. Stayed here in hopes we could see the Aurora Borealis, and we did!
Pretty average state park with very little to do. It is closeish to Traverse City. Sites were small, bathrooms were clean. Near the Interlocken Center for the arts.
We went here with a somewhat large group of people, and reserved about 5 campsites together in anticipation of a trip tubing down the Platte River. We were applying sunscreen when another member of our group showed up. We set the closed bottle of sunscreen on the table next to our camper and went to great them 2 sites away. We were gone from our site about 10 minutes and when we returned, we had a "warning" notice that we couldn't leave sunscreen outside for fear of attracting bears. It seemed like overkill, since the park ranger waved as she drove past us at our friends siteā¦ why couldn't she have just mentioned something versus leaving a written ticket? Over the course of the weekend, our group got multiple "warnings" for equally ridiculous things (like the tire a truck that was partially on a paved part of our booked ADA campsite, not at all part of the public area, completely on the site, yet it was an offense to be parked on the "sidewalk") and felt like we had to tiptoe the whole weekend. It made it less than enjoyable.
The saving grace of this place was the location. I don't know how anybody would enjoy an experience with the way the rangers hovered. We have since found a campground nearby that we prefer.
Pros: Location! 25 minutes from Mackinaw City, 10 Minutes from Pellston for supplies. Right on Burt Lake. Clean pit toilets. Generally not too crowded.
Cons: Small sites, especially for a Statr Forrest Campground. Can be pretty loud.
