lovely & damp

gorgeous camp site with giant trees but the showers are coin fed unfortunately. amazing trail where you can see the ocean from. very cool.

family camp spot

safe campground for kids, limited cell service, bad mitten and volleyball courts, balls, and rackets available in the C store as well as firewood, food and beer. helpful and accommodating staff, even give you a map at the entrance with your campground circled and directions to it. fantastic showers with no pay or time limit and clean bathrooms. they’re running a tight and fun ship. easily one of the best campgrounds i’ve been to around the country.

work for it

you’ll find the best spot inside the marine layer, this was the best. 4 wheel vehicle but honestly? honda fits we’re behind us.

this campground rocks

no fuss, super easy, just drive in if you’re after hours and pay in the morning. special little spot and nice visitors

really nice

simple, really damp & gorgeous. huge trees and mostly in the shade. nice enough bathrooms and the showers are coin operated.

fantastic & simple

loved this place. super damp, but amazing views on the trails. nice bathrooms but they’re coin operated showers.

great quiet spot

I went here beginning of March 2020 and it was gorgeous. no one else there, super quiet, amazing sunsets, and great rock climbing. Also, the stars are impeccable. Hopefully you have a hearty vehicle because the roads are tough up to it.

best campground!

we were at camp 86 and highly recommend it. lots of bees in the morning though!

nice campground but expensive

for a distanced campground, it’s probably just easier to go disperse camp own the road! $24 is expensive when you’re just setting up a tent and can’t make a fire.

great dispersed site

so, so windy the night we showed up but we set up in the dark and it was fairly easy. nice morning views and if you’re on your way to joshua tree it provides an interesting route down to it.

great campsite!

a little far from Butte, but really pretty lake. love the vibe here as far as nice scenic lake sites that are well spread out. we didn’t have to hurry here as it’s a wednesday and it was pretty empty but still traveled. good phone service!!

new favorite place in the world

saw these reviews and was so worried when we showed up at 8pm to climb these crap roads, low and behold we found the BEST campsite SOMEHOW not taken. check out our views in the pics! so worth it. stayed an extra night just because.

it’s quiet, lovely, and clean. spots are super big and spread out, very different than other dispersed camping.

loved this shady campground

easy to get into zion, a little hot during the night but easy to find a place with shade.

best campsite ever

easy, right off the road campsite overlooking grand staircase. amazing. spots were full but keep driving and you’ll find a great view, no problem. dispersed so take your trash out! quiet, lovely, stars were amazing.

yet another amazing site at Oak Point

I've stayed here twice now since being in New Mexico. This site is right on the water, overlooks the canyon, and is close to a hike to the right side of the canyon through a dried up riverbed. I *love* staying here. It's so peaceful, quiet, enough trees to keep you shaded from the harsh sun here. The road is runner friendly, so you can go on a jog if you like. Its definitely a campsite for people looking to strictly hang out.

views and sunsets are EPIC. Stay here instead of the packed Rio Chama campground if you're a casual camper who doesn't need amenities. And pick up your toilet paper so this place stays nice!

Best Kept Secret

My friends and I were climbing at the Cattle Wall all day, and decided we wanted to disperse camp. While we pulled up to Jemez camping nearby, the park rangers told us it was closed because of Covid, but we could go down the road to this unmarked, unnamed, dispersed camp site.

when we did we drove to the left, followed the path until we saw an opened gate, and turned up to a site on the right. It was well-used and had a fire pit, but you're not allowed to have fires right now.

We wandered down to a cliff, and the most BEAUTIFUL view awaited us. If it was known, it would be a better view than the jemez falls and people would FLOCK to it. Instead, it was our campsite, free, and people-less. This is just a new mexico thing, I guess. finding best kept secrets everywhere.

PS: weather was perfect, no sounds from anywhere in the campsite, completely amazing! Definitely go here.

Beautiful, crowded

it was memorial weekend, but it looked very crowded at this specific campsite. you’re much better off doing dispersed camping down the road, which is easy to find and closer to the main road.

Lovely, Beachy, Scenic

These coordinates are a rough estimate, but this entire forrest road is filled with amazing campsites you can simply pull off and camp in. currently there’s a fire ban, so it makes it hard to stay warm at night, but the stars are amazing. it’s quiet. it’s lovely. there’s canyon walls for miles. it’s really amazing. some of these pics are from the nearby canyon that’s a bit of a walk up the road, but most are from our campground. loved our first experience camping in New Mexico!
