- Kindling ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️ 5/5 Kindling was dry and abundant! Good variety of sizes.
- Cooking grate/fire ring ⛺️ 1/5 Only because there IS a grate. Most other sites have better system but this one is broken.
- Hammock trees ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️ 4/5 Hung two hammocks at site, could hang more. Trees could be slightly farther apart, but they were sufficient and there were options.
- Privacy ⛺️⛺️⛺️ 3/5 Other campsites were visible from this site (especially 24) and most campsites here are right on the road. 23 and 24 are set back a bit.
- View ⛺️⛺️⛺️ 3/5 This is one of the lakeside campsites. You can see the lake from the campsite, but its not very close to the shore. The prairie next to our site is quite lovely. The moonrise over the lake the first night was incredible.
- Neighbors ⛺️⛺️ 2/5 We expected some noise as this site is on an ATV trail. What we didn’t expect was three hours of chainsawing on Saturday afternoon. Other than a few folks riding by on souped-up golf carts blasting “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” the ATV traffic was not an issue.
- Firewood ⛺️⛺️ 2/5 Drove to County Line Gas Station in Minocqua to get firewood, which was pretty far. Almost nothing for firewood closer than that, as far as we could tell. $6 for a large bundle, not bad! Some of the bundles were a bit wet, however.
- Toilets ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️ 4/5 Pit toilet cleaned and restocked daily. What more could you ask for?
I stayed here for two nights in September. Site 271 was just enough of a walk to feel remote but not so far that I couldn't carry all my stuff. I did have to walk quite close to one of the other walk-in campsites when going to my car, however, so know that if there are other people in the sites nearby, you will see them. The sites close to the road are not private at all. Water is available at drinking fountains/spigots around the campsite. One I tried had barely a trickle but the other one had plenty of water pressure. The bathhouse was fairly clean and had hot showers, which was great after a 10-mile hike one day. I hammock camp, so getting a site with good trees for hammocking is important to me. I appreciated the preview photos on the state's reservation system. The site I picked had lots of great options for hammock hanging!
The trails at Governor Dodge are amazing. I left on foot from my campsite and hiked the Meadow Valley, Lost Canyon, Stephens Falls and Goldmine trails. Lost Canyon was BEAUTIFUL and had so many interesting geographical features. The trails behind the hike-in campsites also lead to some cliffs with some really amazing views.
I have stayed here a couple of times and it is hands-down my favorite campground. Many of the sites are right on the river. There are very clean pit toilets and a pump for well water. Other campers have been extremely respectful and friendly. The campsites are wooded and shady, and have plenty of trees that are placed ideally for hammock hanging. My favorite thing about this campsite is that it is right on the water. You can hear the constant rushing of the water over the rapids, which is so relaxing at night. The fire rings have adjustable grills that can be swung away from the fire when you are not cooking. There is a trail that runs along the river and many well-placed trees for hammocking if you like to be DIRECTLY on the river or even hanging over the water.
