Windwhistle in Canyonlands

Convenient small campground on the way into Needles Overlook (6 miles from main highway 191). Close to road but quiet at night. 15 sites total. Clean bathrooms. Intermittent Verizon 1 bar service (meaning don't count on it).

The little nature trail is only .5 miles but you get up close to the rock formations and it has a lot of vegetation ID. Nice amenity.

Would give it 4 stars if we chose a better site

We chose site #4 to spend 1 night on our way thru Prescott heading back to New Mexico.

On arrival, we realized it was just about the closest site to the highway. If the sites further in the campground are available, that would be a much better choice.

The restroom near the site was dirty and in bad repair. Because there is a day use parking lot nearby, we are guessing that restroom gets too much use. Other restrooms in the campground were better but not great. Most had broken locks and needed more frequent cleaning.

Overall, the campground is very convenient to a great town (Prescott) and if you can get one of the far interior sites, it can be a better experience than we had.

Great campground but mediocre campsite

Site 049 is set off from the road but you park your vehicle in a 4 slot space nearby. That means you have to carry all your gear 100 feet every time you need to get something from the van. Also, the assigned parking slot is just about on top of the restroom, so everyone troops by your vehicle to use it.

You would not know these facts just by looking at the NPS photos, so our advice is to try to search for photos taken by campers rather than NPS.

Campground itself is fantastic. Our second time to Joshua Tree but first time in Jumbo Rocks. Lots of ways to ramble around the rocks and desert.

Well maintained sites near beautiful West Fork San Juan River

Compact campground but decent buffer between each site. Only a short distance to the river. Very well maintained restrooms and potable water source. Sites 16, 17 and 18 closest to river. 16 and 17 are pull throughs.

A mile or so from Rainbow Hot Springs trailhead
