We parked one night at this campground on our way further south just for one night. It was a bit crowded and noisy, with not too much easily accessible from the grounds. The trails were pretty short/not well-traveled, but the historical buildings/remnants were cool. The primitive sites are just kind of tucked into one corner of the grounds—this is definitely mainly an RV site. No tent pads (which is fine) and the grounds were kinda mucky (I'm sure it had just rained recently, but we had to drive through it to get to our tucked away site). We chatted with a lot of locals who keep their campers there for the season, and they were super friendly. We bought firewood there, and the bathroom facilities were decently kept.
There are two campgrounds within Natural Bridge State Resort Park—Whittleton and Middlefork. Three friends and I stayed at Middlefork, with a tent site right along the Middlefork Creek. The front part of this campground is RV/hookup, and you have to go over this hill to get to the primitive sites. The bathroom (toilets, showers, sinks) was decently kept (facilities were in the front half of the campground so we had to walk over that hill to get to it). We were able to purchase firewood on the grounds. The sites were pretty well spread out, but if you're looking to hang a hammock, it's not the most ideal spot with the trees tucked away or spread really far apart. We were a short drive from the park/bridge and several other hiking opportunities. The bridge was definitely busy, even at the end of September, but all of the trails we were on otherwise were pretty quiet. You can access some trails in the Daniel Boone National Forest by the Whittleton Campground. Overall, we had a great time, and plan to return!
We camped here over Memorial Day weekend for a little getaway. We mainly came to fish—since this spot is an easy drive to Spruce Knob Lake. (Had a great time trout fishing!) Campgrounds were clean and well-maintained. Ample space, picnic table, fire pit, firewood available on site, solar-powered water pumping station… and the campsite manager has an adorable pooch. I was definitely impressed by the bathrooms as well. They almost smelled… good? If you know you know!
You won’t have service for about an hour (or more) driving up to the site, but it’s a pretty direct route and we didn’t have any trouble navigating without GPS. If you need to make an emergency store visit, the closest Walmart is about an hour and a half away (but it’s a NICE one and is well-stocked, especially for all your camping needs).
It rained pretty much all weekend when we were there, unfortunately, and when it wasn’t raining we were still in the clouds so misted non-stop. Nonetheless, a great spot!
