I visited Rock Island on 8/12/23, during the peak Perseid meteor shower viewing period. Rock island SP is a dark sky spot and combine that with lesser people around, it was a perfect location for stargazing!
About the site(20): Very spacious but the distance btw the picnic table/tent and the fire ring was somewhat far. Can see the neighbors but far enough to maintain some privacy. A short walk to the beach! There are sites that are closer to the water (i think 26-28) and i would definitely stay in one of those sites next time.
Island in general: Like many people mentioned, there’s a water pump near the boat house and pit toilets scattered thru the campsites. Firewood are sold for $7/bundle during 4:30pm-5:30pm. Bring cash!!
One big no-no: SPIDERS. WHY SO MANY SPDIERS?!?!? spiders are crawling everywhere. Yeah the beach was so nice and didnt feel like I was in Wisconsin but there are COUNTLESS SPIDERS crawling on the beach. Why?!?!? So no to a picnic blanket, a camp chair is a MUST.
I was only there for one night to see the meteor shower but will definitely return to enjoy the island, check out the lighthouse and come fully prepared for some anti-spiders measures. There’s also a tour led by the ranger/friends of the Rock Island org (not sure which) and SUP/kayak rental as well.
Mora was so close to Rialto beach, only a 3 minute drive or so. Our site was D71, which was next to the Mora road so we could hear the traffic but nothing too bothersome at night. Bathrooms were clean, no showers though. It seemed like there was a trail that headed towards the Rialto beach but not sure if it does lead there. Overall, lovely campground and will revisit!
Great location, so close to the park entrance. An hour or so away from Paradise Inn and Sunrise Lodge. Hiked Silver Falls Trail which was right across from our campsite (E10). Clean bathrooms overall. The river running through the campground was elite. People were jumping off the rock, swimming, etc. Absolutely no cell service and the campground host was seen driving a truck full of firewoods for sale ($8/bundle i think)
Star taken because there was no shower (although we washed all the sweat and grimes off at the river) and MOSQUITOES.
Snagged a spot (#102) right before the Memorial Day weekend. Spacious site, somewhat private because of the surrounding trees. If you want to be surrounded by hammock-able trees, i suggest sites 94-99. Our site was both close to vaulted toilets/water and shower building, which was a plus. Shower head pressure was lovely and hot water was great! One downside was that people were loud and playing music till midnight but oh wells.
Was worried about bugs but I think it was okay. Maybe we were there before it began. i did find some ticks on my camping chair though so beware.
Though we didnt explore much of the Buckhorn SP, we chose this site because it was under an hour drive from Mirror Lake SP and Devils Lake SP. Making a day trip to those parks and Wisconsin Dells was a breeze.
First backpacking trip in the Midwest and this was a surprisingly scenic place with a great backpacking sites! We did forest glen river ridge trail; started from the staff parking lot and walked about 8 miles to the east camp. We had a big group and took sites 3 and 5 because they were on a flatter ground. All sites were well shaded and there was even an OUTHOUSE!!! The rangers told us the water from the Vermilion River was safe to drink with filtration but note that you do have to walk down to the river and up to the campsites. Both sites came with a picnic table and a fire ring. Had a lovely time even with the thunderstorm.
The fall itself is amazing and the location is unbeatable since you’re camping in the State Park. But in my opinion that’s the only good part of this campground, which wasn’t bad for my quick one night stay.
The bathrooms were messy, with a couple of toilets not flushed/clogged. Thank God shower stall in a decent condition and it was free! Nice hot waters as well.
I stayed on a Saturday night so the crowd was definitely loud and nosy.
Found this campsite through Dyrt and I vouch for this campsite as the #1 place to stay when you come to check the fall foliage in NH.
Location is central; close to hiking trails, tourist attractions, and Woodstock to grab ciders and local brews. Bathroom and showers were kept so neat, it surprised me. You need quarters to access a shower ($2.50 for 5 minutes) and the camphost can exchange your dollar bills to quarters.
I got there on Thursday during the peak fall foliage season but I was able to snag a ff spot next to the pond (maybe like 20 steps away). It was spacious and very well leveled.
Waking up for a sunrise was never easier than this. I wish I had a clear sky but the rising sun hitting the trees across the pond was gorgeous. Will definitely stay here again next time I visit NH.
Came to this campground for a quick night’s stay and I was so bummed out to stay one night! Visited during the peak fall foliage time and the site was so beautiful!
I stayed at the site 11, which was a walk-in site but the walk was only 15 steps from the car so it wasn’t that of a big deal. The site was leveled nicely and had a nice privacy as well. While I could hear them, could not see them very well.
Bathroom was nice and it was close to hiking trails, restaurants and nearby attractions. Would definitely come back and stay for couple nights if I do get a chance next time.
I had 53C and the site had a partial shade, flat grounds, and it was right by the river! I didn’t go swimming but the family next to my site seemed like they were enjoying the river, especially the little ones. At night, the river provided white noise and I had no problem falling asleep!
Somewhat close to the valley, as it took me around 40 minutes to Tunnel view. Had at&t and had absolutely no service. There are two general store close by.
Sites are spaced out and the restrooms/showers were super clean! Met some friendly folks and had a great time there. I did wind cave trail and pass mountain trail and i recommend both!
Got to this campground because lake havasu was full. It’s about 20 minutes from Lake Havasu city and I liked how it’s not so crowded compared to there. There’s a nice beach area and bathrooms/showers were clean!
Heard about this place from someone I met on the road and decided to check it out. I made it there with my honda civic. Rough but definitely doable! But for driving the loop and anything beyond, I wouldn’t recommend. As some reviews on Google mentions it, this place can get WINDY! I thought about pitching my tent but decided to sleep in the car instead. The wind woke me up at 3am ish and kept me up all night. So be prepared!(maybe bring some earplugs?)
Overall, great place for photos and solitude. I will probably return and hopefully it won’t be too windy then.
Saw this place on Google maps and decided to check it out. There are many sites to choose from and they’re nicely spaced! If you wanna be right against the rocks, I recommend sites 15~28. Bathrooms were super clean and I will definitely return here.
