Great for tent camping

Great campground for tent camping!  The sites for tents were walk-ins, but wagons were available and all the sites were easily accessible from the parking lot.  Some sites were right on the water, but slightly up in elevation.  Great view of stars and night and great view of river and mountains from the visitor center.  We expected some encounters with black bears, but after not seeing any the first couple of nights we asked that park ranger about the chances and were informed there was actually a very slim chance, still its good to be prepared.

By Far Our Favorite Campground

This was the first campground we visited with our large family when we started camping.  After camping at several other campgrounds in the area, this still remains our favorite.    The campground was clean and the spaces were large.  The staff was very friendly and did a great job maintaining the park.   Unfortunately the water park was closed when we attended, but there was still plenty of things to do.  The demonstration by the park rangers was well done and a highlight for the kids.

Some amenities; appeared to have some permanent residences.

Main office was closed at the time of visit.   Pool seemed to be well kept.  Miniature golf course was available but appeared to need some maintenance.   Overall small campground, but not a bad place for an overnight stay.

Some amenities; appeared to be mostly permanent residences.

Park office was closed at time of visit.    Park appeared clean.   Had a basketball hoop and wooded area.  Residence appeared to be permanent and friendly.

Closed Indefinitely

This park is located on Quantico Marine Corps Base.  You must have a valid military ID to access the base before you can proceed to the park.  However, the park itself is closed indefinitely.   The entrance is gated to deny access.

Nice area, difficult to put in trailer.

This park was well maintained, as most state parks have been.  However, the sites were a good size but were very difficult to get even a small trailer into the site due to the narrow roads.  We were tent camping, in the beginning of May, and the weather was cold and wet.  The swimming area was nice for the kids, but no lifeguard was on duty at that time.  No luck with shore fishing from everyone I talked to.  The sites were a good combination of sun and shade, great view of stars on clear nights.  Common areas can fill up with groups during the day on weekends.  Courthouse was only about 15min away and offered a very interesting visit of a historical site.   Overall, not our favorite campground, but this was mainly to the pain getting into a site.

Great campground; need to update map.

This was a great campground.  We were tent camping, so the humidity was a bit rough the first week of June.  The camp sites were very well maintained and the bathrooms were clean, although lacking some hot water for showers.  The camp site map can be a bit confusing as the colors don't always match, which can be misleading for getting a site on the water.  I suggest getting a site specific site to guarantee your spot on the water.  The bugs were a bit much, but manageable.  The splash pad was a great option for kids, but could get a bit crowded mid afternoon on the weekend.   There are plenty of boat launches; not much good shore fishing in off season, but boaters seemed to be doing well.   Most, if not all the sites, were very well shaded and most were very good in size.  Overall great campground with plenty to offer.
