Lovely small campground Lovely small campground

Arrived at 4:30, in our 24ft camper. All RV sites were full. When driving out the camp host, John, greeted us with a smile, and confirmed RV sites were full, but one Tent site was available, and we could stay in the parking spot. Fire pit Table Garbage Water Cleanest bathroom ever Quiet

Quiet and off the beaten path

Drove past several sites, most of which were by water. We did find one we thought we liked, but branches over hung, and rested on our camper (8ft high) and in fact most sites were shaded. As to be expected, mozzies were present, but after 5mins of the door being opened and several flying in, we decided the area wasn't for us. There were other branches of the road that could be explored as well.

Just 1 night if need be

Well, not the best place we stayed at. Arrived to trash bags beside the bin, half a rib cage (skeleton) of some animal (which we found the rest of the deer .5m down the road) and the 2 vault toilets need of a decent clean / toilet paper, but they didn't smell and were adequate for the night. We were the only people here, but locals dropped by for dog walks or rest stops. Area did have a grill, firepit, one picnic table in the open and 2 tables under a large cover. 2 gravel slopes go down to the river, but could imagine with the sediment at the river edge, car wheels may become stuck. Trains / rail crossing was 100yards away, as previously mentioned in other reviews, and our observations were as follows…..9 trains from mid afternoon  to early morning next day, 4 of which at night. Apart from the  3‐4 long horn blasts each time one came by, the actual train passing was not disturbing…

Lovely waterfront campground

Stayed 3 days, due to not wanting to drive in the storm the last day. First 2 days were lovely and just the right amount of shade from the trees. Only 2 vault toilets, 1 in each of the RV and Tent areas. Could have done with a regular clean, but there were only 2 sites taken when we stayed. An extra 2 toilets and shower block by the boat ramp. Also a playground. (Note: Drinking water and showers are seasonal, so check the website if you need these to be operational) Each of the RV sites had their own grill and picnic table. Looked like the tent sites may share these facilities. Lots of locals visit to fish, and seemed to be quite lucky as well with Catfish and Walleye. Lovely place to visit for a few days. Also note, if you have an annual parks pass, you may get up to a 50% discount when booking.

Camping with wildlife

Note that the co-ordinates take you to the visitor centre. The campground is another 30m on windy paved roads, and 12m on gravel roads…..but the journey is worth it. Not only the many stop off points along the way, but the campground is large and spacious, with a single vault toilet at each end - which are very clean, and many garbage cans. Some of the picnic tables have a sun shade over them. Prairie dogs and bison are right in the campsite with you. Saw large wild turkeys and a coyote as well. Would recommend staying at least 2 days, to enjoy.

Little piece of heaven

Of course timing is everything, however in early May, no bugs, No traffic, isolated yet near Mt Rushmore, and the Crazy Horse exhibit.

Nestled in trees and rock outcrops

We stayed at the 1st turn out we came across, so cant say what the rest of the sites were like. Gravel road was good driving in, but a large dip getting into site (photo 1) Our 24ft camper leveled easily, with no checks, and behind us was a level grassy patch (photo 2) where you could easily have a 4man tent. Site was clean, so nice to see people pack in / out. Sun from sun up, to about 1hr before sunset. Super quiet.

Serene gem

Very easy to find. Last 1m of dirt road was a bit rutted, but not bad. Were the only ones here, so perfect to turn on some music, or sit in the quiet and listen to birds and elk. Lake teaming with birdlife, and saw fish jumping. Great dark sky. 2 Vault toilets were clean and no smell. No litter seen, so everyone has been good to pack in /out. Several sites have covered picnic tables and grills…or can share with neighbour if park either side. Saw some evidence of small fire puts, but didn't use them. Mostly level sites, but a few levellers wouldn't go amiss. Has a boat ramp.
