Good for passing through

There aren’t too many attractions in the immediate area, but if you’re traveling through Death Valley this is a good place to camp while you explore for the day. A bit crowded, but there are showers and flush toilets. There’s also a restaurant across the street where you can get a prickly pear margarita after a long day of traveling.

Peaceful

Haven’t seen anyone else out here. It’s deafeningly quiet, except for the animals.

Nice for a quick trip

It’s a boat in site that doesn’t require permits, it’s one of the most easily accessible sites in the area. It can get pretty crowded sometimes. You can boat in, or hike the (approximately) 3 miles. Camp sites right on the lake, looking down valley. Trash cans and bear boxes available. Relaxing place to set up a hammock for the afternoon, or stay a few days.

Good Basecamp spot

The Cascades have so many peaks to climb, glaciers to see, and shorter trails. But you have to get deep into the backcountry before you have access to most of them. Cottonwood is a great place to set up camp for a few nights while you spend the days exploring. I recommend seeing horseshoe basin, and if you’re here in the summer, jump in the river! In the hot months, flies can get pretty bad. (Video is from nearby horseshoe basin)

Beautiful

Great spot in the valley of mountains. Lots of bears in this area but they keep to themselves.

You’ll never find another like it

These campsites are HARD to get to, but it’s worth it. Like, way more worth it than any other campground in the area. There’s a pit toilet, and the sites have rock walls built around them because this area is known to get heavy winds.

Busy but cozy

If you’re backpacking in the southern part of the North Cascades, you’ll probably wander right through this campground. Because of this, it can get a bit crowded in the middle of summer. But if you go earlier or later in the season, it’s lovely. Designated fire areas, near boxes, and you can camp right next to the creek. It’s only 3 miles from Stehekin so it’s nice for a quick overnight trip.

One of my favorites

My friends and I came here as somewhat of a celebration vacation. We had a little trouble our first night because we arrived so late and the campsites are first come first serve, but the next day we were able to score two of the walk-in campsites. Both have fire rings and a picnic table, and it provided us with enough privacy to truly enjoy our space, but we were close enough to cook dinner and have fires together at night. It’s so incredible laying in a smooth rock cove, eating hot dogs and laughing with your friends! I love the walk in camp sites here and will probably be back in the future
