Basic but nice
This is a pretty basic campsite, but I enjoyed it.
- I'm a tent camper and had to move sites since the one I originally picked didn't have an area for my tent. Make sure you get there by 3ish to check that your site can accommodate a tent and stakes
- Site had a grill, table and firepit
- Sites were very close together
- They were out of firewood to purchase, but you are allowed to bring your own
- There were a lot of Ole Miss students at the park playing disc golf
- Bathrooms are pretty old
- I could hear highway traffic at night, but it wasn't too distracting
- I would camp here again
So much to do! And beautiful fall tent camping
There is so, so much to do at this park. Unfortunately, we only got to hike around the falls since the weather was so bad.
Tent camping review:
- Lots of flat space for your tent, a canopy and for parking
- Easy to put down stakes
- A ton of beautiful trees
- Mostly RVs - as tent campers, we were in the minority
- Bathrooms were a bit old school; I did not want to shower there
- A lot of trashcans closeby
- So many daddy longlegs
Platform camping
Even though it rained the entire time we were there, we still had fun at the campsite. Here are some details:
- The wooden platform kept our area from getting messy and muddy. We didn't have to worry about rocks and sticks making the tent bumpy
- Use ten-penny nails to nail down your tent and canopy
- The firepit and grill are beside the platform
- Parking is on the platform
- Bathrooms were small but updated
- The views of the water are nice!
Terrible for tent campers
I was actually shocked at how terrible our actual campsite was; we stayed at site 29, which was supposedly intended for tent camping.
Pros
- The front gate staff was very nice; check in and general store staff were average
- The general store was very convenient and decently stocked
- The bathrooms and showers were pretty nice
- Beautiful lake view. It was nice to watch kayakers and rowing teams go by
- Nice tree placement for hammock
- Close to all Stone Mountain activities
- Garbage pickup each morning (but no metal trash can to store it in??)
Cons
- The site is on a freaking hill; there is no flat surface at all and no clearing, so you have no choice but to sleep on sticks/rocks. Thank God to REI for footprints and decent sleeping pads
- Site was dirty when I arrived
- No tent pad
- Parking area is crap; it's somewhere between gravel and nothing
- $20 parking fee
There is no way I would stay at this campground again; it was definitely made for RVs.
Clean, flat, and beautiful tent camping at campsite 61
I tent camped at site 61 in 2015:
- We were pretty close to all the amenities and the campsite checkin/store
- There is a nice, flat tent pad
- Grill and fire ring were nice
- Paved driveup spot
- It wasn't very crowded; the two sites across from us filled up, but that was about it
I would 100% stay at this site again.
