Great dispersed camping near Zion. Drove out in loaded down minivan with not a lot of clearance. Any car could make it down main road and find campsite. Some side roads you would need higher clearance vehicles but did not go down those roads. Sites are marked and most have a fire ring. Fist place we stopped had 5 any hills and broken glass. Next place only had 1 ant hill and it as clean. We set up camp opposite side of ant hill and plenty of room so not an issue. 30 minutes to Zion entrance. We were able to get dinner at restaurant in Virgin right where dirt road starts one night when too tired to cook. Could hear some RV generators but campsites are very spread out so plenty of privacy.
There are lots of campsites at Boysen State Park. I called the phone number and talked to a nice ranger. She suggested Upper Wind River campsite since we did not have boat and wanted to have a nice tent spot. We camped 1 week before site changed from reservation to FF. We planned on staying 2 nights but it was so relaxing we ended up staying 4. 1 day we went to Marina and swim beach. Another day we went to Thermopolis and checked out Dino museum and hot springs. Last day we just hung around camp and relaxed. Campsite had a park for kids. No showers but plenty of water so we set up privacy tent and we’re able to shower when we wanted. If we were there during peak season I bet it would feel a little crowded but was perfect the time of year we went because there were maybe 10 sites filled out of the 80ish there.
Stayed day after Labor Day. First come first serve and not many people there. Was able to find spot next to lake in tent only section. Looks like place was full for Labor Day with reservations but was still pretty clean. It was above 100 degrees so pulled in at 5 and left by 9:30 next morning but great spot with beautiful views for only $14. A goofy ranger stopped by to say “hello” in morning around 9 and checked our pass.
Didn’t actually camp here. Was planning a group camping trip and wanted to scout the place out before hand. Thought BLM land maybe there was a good spot for group of 5/6 vehicles. Camping looked ok but not for groups. Went on Saturday late morning and still 2 sites available. Sites are just a slip off the road. All areas in campsite are roped off so you are not expand your camp it looks like. Good spot to be close to Pinnacles for free and hike but not a spot I would go to hang around the camp site.
