We came here in February and it was the first day they were allowing campers with reservations back. It was lovely because there was almost no one in the campsites. However, we star park staff were working and it’s obvious that they are working on much of the campground.
There are over 180 campsites. I think the river sites are totally worth the money but honestly if you get any site, you will have a great time.
Plenty of bathrooms, showers etc. Facilities were always clean and there was fresh water and flush toilets.
The park is beautiful and lush. We stayed in campsite 72 and it was large and got a lot of direct sunlight since it was in a clearing. Most of the campsites were huge and had a fire pit with grill and a picnic table.
When we were there it rained a little bit but honestly we did not mind since the campsite was so great. The Big Sur river runs through the site and it was great to bring some chairs and sit along the bank.
My only word of caution: We were able to walk through the entire campsite and my only recommendation would be to avoid the sites in the upper campground that are the farthest away from the river, along the hill. Numbers 110-80. Most of those sites are on a hill and have a pretty steep slant.
We stayed at site #66 in early November.
Pros: Our site was large and had River access. It was equipped with a picnic table and fire ring with grate. Power and water were also at the site. Close to the bathrooms but not too close that it was loud. The bathrooms were big and had free showers. There was a laundry room and also an area to dishes near the restrooms. We had three cars and three tents and still have plenty plenty of space. The property had a motel, restaurant, general store and also small cabins for stay options. We appreciated the locations proximity to the sites of Big Sur. We also spent a lot of time at the site since it was so beautiful too. It rained each evening during our stay and was pretty cold but we had a great time still :)
Cons: Site 66 was huge but was also right near the road used by many people at all hours of the day/night. The location is great but was very pricy. The site rate only pays for 2 people and 2 cars. So we had to pay $10 a person and $5 per car, per day above that 2people/2cars.
We came here in early October 2020 for a Friday - Monday trip. The campsite is large and spots are spaced out. Due to COVID a lot of sites were closed, which made everything feel very spaced out.
The area is beautiful. The campsite it self has tons of beautiful redwoods and ferns on the property. It was beautiful to just sit and admire the scenery.
Bathrooms and showers were clean and the campsites were across the street from some short but beautiful hikes.
The visitor center was closed but right next door. The area to check in did sell wood and we noticed a lot of staff throughout our trip.
The campsite was super quite and very peaceful.
We brought our dog which was great. Lots of trees and lots of shade. I think almost every site was shaded. Bring your hammocks because there was plenty of locations on each site to set them up. I would be aware that many of the upper sites are on a slope.
Each site came equipped with a fire ring/grill, picnic table and bear box.
We had the best time and went a little ways up north to go fishing outside of Fortuna. We actually caught a fish this time :) Fishing near the campsite was not recommended due to the low water level. However, their were plenty of options just a short drive away.
We stayed at site #35 which was large but had a slope. However, we were able to find two kind of flat spots to put tents and it was totally fine.
This campsite is pretty awesome. We stayed at site #21 in loop D. The sites were very large and came equipped with a fire ring/grill, bear box and picnic table.
We had a great time exploring the park and hanging out around Lake Manzanita.
Lassen National Park is beautiful and we hope to be back soon. Even during a busy Labor Day Weekend the park was crowded but nothing like a bigger national park (think Yosemite) in a regular weekend. It was nice being able to experience the park without feeling totally overcrowded.
The camp store was very convenient if you forget anything!
This is a great campsite, with lots of amenities. Super family friendly. Lots of kids at this site.
I came here in early August, 2020! It gets warm during the day and many spots have trees, which provide partial shade at some point in the day. I do recommend bringing a pop up structure for the moments when shade is not available.
We stayed at campsite 24, which is right on the river and next to the main river pool access. Lots of people coming by but everyone is respectful and there is some privacy from small trees planted along the path.
At the other end of the site is a river access that’s smaller and allows dogs (the main one does not). Since I do not have kids but do have a dog, I will probably try for the sites closer to the dog access next time.
The main river pool gets busy, lots of kids, families etc. but in the early evening and morning it is pretty empty and was a great time to relax. The dog access river pool was a lot less crowded. You can also float from the dog access pool down river to the main pool site which was a lot of fun.
The property has great bathrooms with showers. They take quarters for the showers, $.25 for 2 minutes. They have a small store onsite for the last minute essentials. They have a air pump to fill up rafts to float in the river. They also have wood delivery to your site if you order by 7pm. Each site has a picnic table and small fire pit with a grate if you want to cook on that! They also have a larger communal areas with BBQ and sink for those wanted to have a group meal. Each campsite has water, electricity and full RV hookups. So lots of RV’s at this location.
Very dog friendly and kid friendly.
Staff was super helpful and always present. They made rounds emptying trash cans, cleaning the bathrooms and just monitoring the area so that’s is super well maintained. You can tell they really love the place and want to keep it clean. They also were super nice when enforcing the rules, not mean but were not afraid to remind people to follow the camp rules (which were super reasonable).
No cell service, which was great. But you can drive up the hill 10 minutes to park at the vista and get a signal.
All in all we had a great time and will be back!
