A top destination in Texas

We camped one night here on our way to Colorado over Labor Day weekend and I’m SO glad we did! We stayed at the tent only campground, Cactus Camp, and it was perfect - short walk or quick drive to the Mesquite camp bathrooms & showers. It was hot during the day of course but for the beginning of September, it was surprisingly cool and comfortable at night! The stars at night, were big and bright… We hiked Rock Garden just before sunset and woke up at 5:30am to hike the Lighthouse Trail for sunrise (highly recommend getting an early start for coolers temps and an awesome sunrise at the lighthouse!). If you’re visiting Texas or have lived here your whole life, this is a bucket list state park! Go ahead and add it to yours :)

Beautiful campground on the creek

My family and I stayed here for 3 nights over Labor Day weekend and we loved it! It’s about 10 miles off the highway down a narrow, dirt road, and there were plenty of empty spots over the Holiday weekend. I highly recommend getting a campsite along the creek side (#5 was the BEST). Plenty of space for tents, lots of trees for hammocks, a fire ring, and a nice big picnic table at each site. The website said there’s only one vault toilet but there were multiple. The closest to us was next to site #7 (one for women & one for men!). The creek was too low to fish, but there were great fishing spots in South Fork that we drove to. No drinking water is available, so bring your own! See my photos for the black bear we saw about 5 miles from the campground 🤩

Scenic campground on the river, great location!

Pros: Great location on the river and close to plenty of hiking trails! Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring. The bathrooms were well maintained and there is drinking water available. You can walk to the river from the campground which is very convenient! I'd recommend booking a campsite along the trees and further from the parking lot. Good for groups - you can book multiple spots next to each other. I booked the site through recreation.gov.

Cons: I gave this campground 4 stars instead of 5 only because I prefer less crowded campgrounds where the campsites are more spread out. This campground was full on the Saturday we were there (even though my photos don't show it) which we expected based on it's popularity. Each site is very close to the next. You may end up next to a group of partiers who want to stay up late with loud music, making it hard to fall asleep, so you never know what you'll experience at a campsite like this.
