A week in the woodsi

Just finishing up a week in Quechee State Park campground and have to say the place is really really nice. The sites are nicely spaced and seem to accommodate big rigs rather well. We have seen all shapes and sizes come and go, as well as tent campers, and they offer lean to’s as well. The bathrooms are immaculate with coin (quarters)operated showers. There are plenty of fresh water spigots and a spacious dump site if needed. There is a “campers only” access trail to Quechee Gorge that we took advantage of, which then gave us access to the Dewey Pond trail. The town of Woodstock is a short drive west, and Killington Resort is a bit west of that. Killington offers summer mountain biking, zip lines, adventure climbs and roller coasters, as well as the K1 Gondola to the peak. Stores are within biking and walking distance of the campground entrance. Biggest Pro- Everyone respects the quietness. Biggest Con- It looks like the state has spread out RCA on the sites, which probably could have spread out better and made more level. Also tough to drive a stake into. No Electric or hookups. They also sell ice and firewood at the check in station. Recommend site 11 or the BIRCH lean to as the 2 most spacious and/or secluded sites, as the campground is not too far off route 4 and you may hear cars/trucks

Week on Creek……

Being from extremely overcrowded and Long Island- we decided to take a week long trip and stay at site 14 at Housatonic Meadows State Park Campground in CT. After a beautiful 8 am crossing of the sound on the Port Jeff Ferry, we landed in Bridgeport at 9:20 at shot north on 8 and in an hour and 20 minutes arrived at the Park- we were early, but the Ranger was great and made a couple of rounds and let us know as soon as we could head to the site. This is a small campground and the site on the north side are the the only ones worth staying at- week booked 14. it was a Saturday afternoon, and it was NOT full! On LI- its impossible to get a campsite unless you book it 6 months in advance. Our first 24 hours were a bit of a let down, as we landed right in the middle of a 3 site family “fiesta”…. but we used Winnebago 1700BH to block it out, and set up under the canopy of old growth pines and oaks… by 12 on Sunday-we had the entire campground to ourselves… in the middle of JULY. The fishing, peace and quiet of the place was exactly what we needed!!Tons of birdwatching, hiking, river floating… the cabins look great also- typical campground baths.. mostly tents as we were the only trailer in the park…. wait? what?? We say this place is great!!

Weekend at the Beach

So my wife and I live 30 minutes from Smiths Point and been visiting the beach since childhood, but neither of us had ever camped there… so we decided to end our 2021 camping season with a quick stint at the beach. Being on the beach and camping in October is just awesome. The bugs are gone, the days are warm and the nights are chilly. All in all it a great place to camp. Be prepared for narrow campsites and book early. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because of the fact that since it so tight, people failed to respect their neighbors as far as noise is concerned. Not EVERYBODY likes the same music as you do! It also happened to be Trick or Treat weekend on the campground which really fun to see. Oh and the deer eat lettuce out of your hand. Shhhh- not supposed to feed the deer. Lastly, 10 stars to guys and girls in charge of maintaining such a busy place!!! You guys really do a great job- and those showers!!! Best ever….great water pressure and super HOT!!! See you next October!!

3 Quiet nights

Spent Columbus Day weekend at Cedar Point. We pretty much the entire park to ourselves. Arrived on Friday afternoon and enjoyed a quiet peaceful weekend with cool weather and no bugs. Bathhouse with showers and dishwashing was close by. Plenty of space to walk and hike out to the lighthouse, kayak, biking or just relax. Will be next year!

One Night

I left Long Island without a destination in hopes of finding a place to camp for one night to decompress- I knew my chances were slim to none… but what the hell. I had lived in the Poconos in the early 90’s and knew about Dingman’s so I figured I would give it a shot. Low and Behold….. the place was not even half full!! I could not believe it. The 2 young staffers at the desk hooked me up with site 94 which was far away from everyone, grabbed a bag of ice for “sodas” and cup of noodles and had a great night. The only downside was there were a couple large groups that, even though far away, did not have any camping etiquette and were just way too loud…. not sure where the Rangers were that night, but it was a free for all. Woke up a took a hot shower, walked down to river and explored the rest of the grounds. Will definitely return with Bike and Kayak!!
