We recently spent two enjoyable days at the De Soto State Park improved campground. Site 22 was nice and large and butted up against the trees. Lots of downed trees made for a great fire. . The campground was very full, mostly with fifth wheels and motorhomes. Not too many tents or pop-ups. The facilities were very clean and spacious but not very accessible. We had to walk nearly a quarter of a mile just to reach them on the camp roads. You could use a trail cutting through other campsites to get there quicker via a trail in the woods but be careful as my wife slipped and fell on the slick rocks and leaves. It was one of the quietest campgrounds we’ve ever been in. Accessing the campground from the north can be a little bit harrowing as the roads are steep with hairpin curves and somewhat narrow. The route from the south is much easier particularly if you have a large motorhome or a long fifth wheel. We would definitely stay there again.
We had a quick nights stay in Davidson River Campground after picking up our new SylvanSport GO tent trailer in nearby Brevard, North Carolina. Our campsite was pretty big, clean, level, and close to the restrooms. This camp was really nice and we would definitely come back again. We didn’t have much time to explore as we were busy setting up our new toy. Had one set of noisy campers (though their guitar, fiddle and singing were actually not too bad) they did party past quite hours but someone from the park came and asked them to quiet things down…which they did. Had several nice visits with other campers. Don’t pass this campground by!
It may sound funny but it’s well known that if Mama ain’t happy then ain’t no one happy. But the wash house made Mama happy. Very large and very clean with private showers. There was a sign on the doors indicating they were closed for cleaning every afternoon from 1-3 but that never interfered with anything. The whole campground was very clean and the folks running things were super friendly. We are tent campers and our site was very small and dirt only but we did have a covered shelter and electricity. I would have give those up for one of the grassy sites down the hill with no electricity. We were pretty close to the highway but it wasn’t too bad at night. Our fellow campers were all amazingly friendly and we visited with someone each evening as they were walking past. We came up to ride bikes on the Mickelsen trail which was fantastic and if you are a cyclist you should definitely check it out. We could have ridden from the camp to the trail but had to purchase or pass so drove into Custer and parked right by the trail. They had a couple of projects going on while we were there…adding electricity to some of the other ten sites, building some really cool barrel pods for sleeping in…so they are upgrading and making improvements to an already really great camp ground. Would have given 5 stars but the small dirt tent site, the fact that one of the restrooms was out of paper towels for two days and they ran out of ice over the weekend for two days lost them a star.
We only stayed one night but would definitely come back. We had a nice large tent site right by the river. No trees on this site but the view and the river made up for that. Scenery was great and we had a number of great conversations with some of the other campers. Camp hosts were very friendly and the facilities were pretty nice. There were porta-potty’s half way to the wash house but they were clean and didn’t smell too bad and they saved us from having to walk another few minutes. We had some noisy neighbors but they quieted down once we asked. We paid $27 for the one night.
This was definitely the worst campground we’ve stayed in. We almost just left after paying for our site and seeing the condition of the campground But it was late afternoon and we were tired. The tent camping sites were TINY and separated from each other by “stick fencing” made of tree limbs. There was also a house 20 feet behind us and the owners were very loud until 11:30. Most of the amenities were not available or so filthy that you couldn’t use them. No paper towels or soap in the wash house. No water in the supposed stream that runs thru the park. We didn’t take the time to look at the RV sites so can’t really comment But if you are a tent camper you should look elsewhere.
