Alamo State Park: Section D

Alamo Lake is a long-time favorite spot. Only a couple hours West of PHX and some great views with an abundance of SxS / ATV trails. Alamo Lake is also very well known for it's fish (especially bass & crappie). Section C has Water & Electric. Section D is primitive and as such, less crowded. This is a great place Oct - April. Outside of those dates, you'll want Electric so you can run the A/C. Wi-Fi & cell service is questionable. Some spots are good, others are not. While I've done a lot of work out here, try to stay off the devices, PCs and TVs. Enjoy what's out here!!

"Iffy" to get to.....

Not able to access this site of ours trained in the last week. It's a 1 lane road to get to site. Just before the "T" there is an area when all the water goes thru. This is a sandy/dirt crossing and would be fine if no water. There had been some in the area and while it wasn't raining that day, there was 12"+ deep of mud to cross. Can't imagine the challenge of our was dry upon arriving and trained overnight! Take caution and watch the weather reports before attempting. We had to back up about 1/2 mile as there was no place to turn around.

1,000' +/- Up along Mogollum Rim

This is an amazing site that's about 18 miles from Knoll Lake. Spectacular View of the valley below.

A FAVORITE!!!!

Alamo Lake State Park is one of our FAVORITES!!!! Great camping with large spots that aren't on-top of each other. Site amenities go from Full-Hookups to primitive. If looking for primitive, there's no need to camp in the campground. There are HUNDREDS (of not thousands) of places to camp outside the park. Look for signs for "The Wayside" and head that direction. Park where you like (off the road). One of the reasons we like the Park (especially in winter) is because the heater often runs all night and it with AC hookups, we don't worry about the heater fan draining the batteries. Also, we know that we can get WiFi in "Section C" and still have great views!!!! As for the Wayside, plan on visiting!!! Wonderful, family owned business that are doing their best to promote SxS, UTV, ATV 4x4 exploring in the area. There is also a runway just West of the restaurant/bar and it's common to see small airplanes visiting for breakfast or lunch.

Clean but CROWDED

This is a very new, very small KOA. Trees are newly planted and sites are SMALL. If you like your front yard to contain your neighbors "poop-shoot", water line and electric box, then this is for you. With all the open land, it's too bad this campground couldn't double (or triple) the site sizes. Staff seem great but camping is about being outdoors and enjoying nature. I don't want to feel like I'm living in an apartment when camping. This campground just wasn't for us.

Fantastic

This is a great state campground. Not a lot of sites but they're REALLY BIG and gives a sense of being in the forest but still has toilets nearby for those who need them. Great place for tent camping but most sites can support MH & Trailers.

Fantastic!!!

This is our favorite payson area campground!!! Large, disbursed spots. If you want space and quiet, this it your place!

AWESOME VIEWS with few others around!!!!

This is the place for those seeking solitude and a fantastic view of the Vermillion Cliffs!! and BONUS 3 Bars on Verizon if you wish to surf the internet or stream your favorite show if you REALLY NEEDED TO…. Road to the left ends in 4 mi. Road to the right about 1 mi. Left is a bit rough and at 2.5 mi has steep hill. Right is flat and easy.

Closed......

Arrived at 12:30 pm on Sunday, May 16 and there's a closed gate across the entrance.

Must have a small trailer.

We have a 28' 5th wheel and after looking at the potential spots, had to back our way out. There is no way to turn around. If camping here, I would have had to back my way into a spot. Scenic views a short drive or hike away but not an easy place to camp.

What do you want for FREE?

Located just before south entrance. FREE ("Boondock") camping on East side. Electric (no water) for $15 on West side. We picked East as Solar gives us all the A/C we need! Gift shops to explore on both sides. SEVERAL abandoned cars in front of shops to "chum for patrons"…. Great place to stage before a day of exploring. Not sure I'd stay more than 2 nites but a night before and nite after visiting the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert is perfect! Just make sure to spend some $ at the gift shop if you stay for free.
