We went mid week and were surprised to find it less than half full. Spacious sites, the loop near the developed bathroom is convenient both for the bathroom (obviously) and a cliff view trail that was really nice.
The bathroom did get backed up the morning we left, assuming it was taken care of promptly considering we’ll saw several rangers doing various other things in the campground while we were there.
Really simple campground. We stayed in the drive in loop. Arrived at 7 pm on a Monday and grabbed the last spot available. Pit toilet could be cleaner but suffices. The sandbar was fun to explore. The walk in campsites were very nice all on the river. Going back I would go for one of those and sleeping in a tent over the drive in loop.
Main negatives are that it’s fairly out of the way and not near / on the way to hikes or destinations, and there’s a road going up the other side of the gorge that was fairly loud whenever periodic trucks drove by. The train was also fairly loud but a much more pleasant sound imo, you can hear it coming from fairly far away and the horn sounds angelic with the echo of the deep gorge.
Amazing park with surprising diversity of trail experiences!
Hickory Ridge Campground is a good base camp for adventuring within the park. The campground itself is ok with a reasonably clean no frills restroom / shower / dishwashing station. None of the sites are particularly private.
The campground is a short drive from the main attraction trail heads. There is a trail from the campground to other areas but not short enough to be a doable extension for a family with little kids.
The camp store was closed the entire time we were here despite the posted hours as well as the laundry.
Next time I’m here I’m totally planning on splurging on either yurt 1 or 3 - they have huge decks and good views.
It was excellent. The waterfront sites are prime. We had site 51 and if we went back (which we hope to) we would get site 51 again. Great water access directly from the campsite with a small beach. Surprising amount of space between this site and the neighboring sites. The only downside to this site is the walk to the bathroom is up a steep stretch of road. Said bathroom was Airbnb status clean.
Impressed by how well maintained this campground was for how quiet it was midweek. Beautiful park, nice campground within ear shot of a creek. Bathroom was very clean and showers were so hot I thought I melted my flip flops for a second. Most sites have cool boulders for kiddos. The library was a nice surprise with a modest collection of books (not just for kids). No Verizon service at the campground but 1 bar at the visitor center which I could bike to in two minutes. Next time I go I will try to snag site 14
