All 12 non-electric sites appeared to have fire ring, picnic table, trash can, flat parking area. They did vary a bit in size. I was there on Friday and Saturday and there were no more than 4 other sites occupied. I was surprised that the bathrooms had running water! Overall, everything was quiet and relaxing. Some traffic from people driving by, but not bad at this time of year. It was delightful falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the creek! There are miles and miles of trails, I hiked 16 and only encountered 1 couple. The other campgrounds in the park have more amenities, too.
I stayed in the non-electric, tent-only campground NOT the RV campground. Out of curiosity, I drove through the RV campground and it was so loud and cramped! But the tent-only area is separate. Walk-in sites with pit toilets and potable water. The map of how the sites are laid out online is extremely inaccurate, I would not have picked my site if it had been accurate. But there was only one other camper and we all had plenty of space - I could barely see them through the trees. All sites appeared to have a picnic table and fire ring. Many miles of trails / dirt roads for hiking and biking. Clear skies at night. Very relaxing.
Need to reserve online, books up very fast. Got lucky and found an opening for site 5 which was right on river and away from the busier parts of park - didn’t see a single person. Nice tent pads, campfire ring, and provided wood.
Yes, the road is rough, especially the higher up you go - take your time and have an appropriate vehicle. But it's worth it. So many options - spots with overlooks, tree-covered spots, open field spots. Something for everyone. It was hard to pick! I pulled off and found a place behind some rocks with nice grass and a fire ring, and several more grass/fire rings, but pitched my tent on some rocks. It was stunning. Didn't hear a single person or noise. I wish I had had more time. I will be back!!
I arrived around noon on a Monday and there were a few spots. I stayed at 15 which was spacious and had a little trail to the lake. Plenty of room for two tents. Bathrooms were the cleanest I've ever seen at a campground. Spigots for drinking water, but no place to wash dishes/etc. I was in a tent only section, but did hear some RVs nearby. A family at the site next to me was pretty loud - kids crying all night. Also could hear some traffic from main road. Otherwise it was relaxing and calm. Lots of hikes nearby. Lovely sunset, helpful host!
I arrived before noon on a Sunday and half the spots were empty. I picked site 6. Could hear the hum of nearby water plant, but it was not bad. Otherwise quiet. Vault toilets and handpump water. I had one bar of cell signal (Verizon). Other campers were quiet, didn't notice them. Great basecamp - I did several day hikes, including Mt. Bierstadt which was just a 15 minute drive away. The road to get here is paved the whole way - not at all sketchy like another reviewer said (don't need high clearance or 4WD)
I wish I could have stayed more than 3 nights! It was so quiet and relaxing. Good sized sites that felt private and more remote than they were, picnic table, fire ring, large bear box. Be sure to use the bear box and don't have food/toiletries in your tent or car - didn't see any bears or evidence of. Other campers were quiet and independent. Pit toilet was clean. Also, there's no water, but the day use area at Maroon Lake has water, I refilled my jugs there, or you could filter/treat the river. The sound of the water at night was so calming and wonderful. 10 minute drive to Maroon Lake, 15 minutes to Aspen.
I stayed at Dock 3 - NOT the main campground. These are non-electric/primitive. There is a vault toilet and a spigot. Perfect little spots on the lake. Table, firering. Only complaint is the streetlight in the parking lot was very bright. But it was a fantastic basecamp for a weekend of trail running and kayaking. The 22 mile trail around the lake is very well marked and easy to run. Absolutely will be back.
I stayed one night at the group site for the Thunderbunny trail races. It was raining and I was prepared and just slept in my car, as many others did. Group site is set off from the main campground which is nice - it was quiet and felt remote. Just one portajohn. I'm not sure if there was water because I didn't need it. Strouds is a beautiful park for trail running, during all seasons, I love it! Also great spot for kayaking!
I planned to stay Friday and Saturday. I went to the kiosk, and happily discovered no one was at this site, which was my preferred site. I triple-checked. But when I got there, there were about 10 men, in 4-5 tents already set up. I went back and checked the kiosk, and they were not registered. I stayed anyways, down the a little ledge to the left when looking at the site. I didn't have a fire, but it was beautiful. That night, however, the group was very loud and I felt unsafe. I packed up in the morning and spent the next night in my Outback in the parking lot, which worked out because it rained and so I didn't have to deal with packing up wet gear. It was very disappointing that group was there and disrupted a beautiful weekend. Mohican is amazing, I've run hundreds of miles on the trails. Will absolutely be back to this site
I prefer primitive campgrounds with no campers/electric, but stayed here when my friend was running the Mohican 100 mile trail race. It was the perfect location for that! Clean bathrooms, good location for the race. I'll never stay here again except for the race - but that's my personal preferences for a quiet, more natural experience.
Stayed one night because I was running the 39 mile backpacking loop in the morning with my buddies. I've run here numerous times, this was my first stay. This campsite was up a little hill from parking - there was nowhere to camp right at my car. It was tucked away and perfect. Shawnee is amazing for trail running - very rugged, remote, challenging. I will camp again next time I run it!
I stayed 3 nights and I was the only person there the whole time. My site was a good size, a nice camping pad, picnic table, fire ring, Clean bathrooms, multiple water taps. Note there is a shooting range nearby, I think the hours were 9am-9pm. Didn't bother me during the day, but definitely could hear it. Clear Creek Lake just up the street was quiet and great for some lazy kayaking. I used this as a base camp for trail running at multiple parks. No cell signal (verizon). $15/night. I definitely will be back for getting off the grid and relaxing!
I stayed 3 nights, and first two were fantastic. On the 3rd night a vehicle parked in the boat ramp lot and blasted music started at 2am, lots of yelling. I heard from several people that the walk-in spots can get pretty rowdy with locals. The pull-in spots were fine. Picnic table, fire ring, grill, camping pad. They were all at least partially shaded, with trees all around. Some girls at site 2 got some food taken from their picnic table overnight and we found bear tracks around their site - don't be stupid like them - keep your food in your car or in a bear safe bag. From the looks of it, people were using the camp as a base, and going out during the day - lots of kayaks and bikes. I ran to the Little Laurel trailhead and took that up to the Grandview park - a long run but fantastic. I drove down to Glade Creek and had a great 12 mile run there, too - I think I'll camp there next time. Anyways, definitely a nice little spot. Bathrooms were clean. Limited cell signal at best (Verizon). No running water.
