We found a great spot right next to the river on forest road 330C near North Fork Campground. The area was fairly busy on Labor Day weekend but we were basically isolated in this spot. One family was camping a little further up the road, but we had zero traffic on our road and the spot was beautiful. We were nestled up against the Little Laramie River which was awesome. We did explore the area a little and found numerous dispersed camping spots in/around the area but none as nice as the spot that we settled on. The exact coordinates are:
41.35475° N, -106.16955° W
Well maintained and fairly new but it is not a place for “outside” campers. The interstate is 20 yards from the first row of sites. It was constant traffic noise 24/7. Sometimes it would slow up a little bit so that you could hear the airplanes flying overhead, or the train going by on the track that are 30 yards away as well.….. So that was nice. LOL. The campground was filled with mostly large 5th wheels and it may be okay for those type of campers who just stay in their camper all of the time, but it is not the place for a camper with an outside kitchen, or people who like to be outdoors when you camp. It was also 100 degrees each day we were there so that didn’t help the situation. There are zero shade trees and the majority of the site face south so there is no shade on the camp side of your camper in the afternoon or evening. I know that I sound like a Karen but these are all facts. I’d pass on this place unless you really like city noise when you camp.
Turn on FR 057. The end of the road is about 1 mile in. There are two very nice spots at the end of the road right along the creek. Across the bridge from the road closed sign there is also an excellent tent spot right along the creek. There are also at least 6-7 spots on the way in, as well as the large trailhead parking spot that others have mentioned. We got luck and got the best spot along the creek as a family was about to leave when we pulled in midday on a Monday. It was absolutely beautiful and very secluded at the end of the road. The spot is 12 miles from West Yellowstone entrance. Excellent Verizon service was a bonus that we don’t get at a lot of dispersed sites. Highly recommended!!
From the highway 93 turn it is 4.6 miles to where we camped. The last 2.3 miles of the drive was on a fairly rough, but very manageable, forest road. (Mostly washboard and a few holes) It was 11.8 miles from our camp to Darby, and about 13 miles to the Yellowstone Ranch.
We grabbed a nice big spot right next to Lost Horse Creek late Friday afternoon. Another RV came into the area later in the evening and crowded us a little bit but we still had plenty of room to spread out. The road in is BUSY. We have camped at a number of dispersed locations over the years and this was BY FAR the busiest forest road we have seen. On Friday night we counted 50 cars passing by before we stopped counting. We drove west down the road a ways Saturday and saw a handful of other sites, but not enough to justify the traffic. We found out that “Twin Lakes” is about 20 miles down the rough forest road from our campsite. We didn’t venture that far as we could only go about 8-10 MPH max in our truck on the washboard road. Maybe we should have tried because it seemed to be quite the attraction given the traffic. This place will do in a pinch but if you are looking for a quiet dispersed camping area kept driving. This is not for you!
We had an enjoyable one night stay at Curt Gowdy State Park. Sites are fairly spread out and are nice with electrical and water. The website said prices from $27.00 but at checkout it actually cost $50.00 for a one night stay. There is no dump station at the park which is kind of a pain. There are a few pay dump station within 10-15 miles. Overall nice place if you don’t mind the $50.00 a night fee.
Very nice spot close to Steamboat Springs. (Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest) We arrived a little before noon on a Saturday in July. The road in was fine and very manageable with the OP 15 and a 1/2 ton truck. We found a beautiful spot 1.9 miles in on the East (left) side of the road. We saw 6-7 other campers set up on the way in… Mostly tent campers and a van or two. (Later in the weekend we did see some fairly sizable rigs occupying some “spots” along the 1.9 mile route to our spot) There may have been a place or two open that we could have chosen on the way in, but I’m glad that we kept going and settled in this spot. We had a beautiful view and the weather was perfect. Only downfall was the mosquitos. They were pretty bad this time of the year. Bring bug spray, or better yet, a misquote tent. We bought one in Steamboat Springs on our second day here and it was well worth the money! Verizon service was good and we had 2-3 bars all of the time. There was a little traffic on FR 302 but only about 1 car every 4-6 hours or so. Overall… Highly recommend!
Nice state park campground in West Okoboji Iowa. Close enough to the action of Lake Okoboji yet has a fairly remote feel. After doing some looking around the area, I believe that this is probably the nicest campground in the area. Sites are fairly close but not super tight. This is a good place to stay for a few days if you want to explore all that Okoboji has to offer. It was full the entire time that we were here and it does fill up quickly so book your trip well in advance.
This is a small 104 acre county park in central/west central Iowa. There are 26 electoral hook up sites and 20 primitive sites. Coat was $10 for primitive and $15 for electric. No reservations. Fist come first served. We pulled in around 3:30PM on a Friday and there were 6-8 electrical sites to choose from. (The place did fill up by Saturday morning though.) Sites are close together and there isn’t much privacy. The bathrooms are decent bathrooms with showers and over all the place was fairly clean. We just wanted a place to stay for a night or two on a pass through and this placed served the purpose. Not a place to visit if you are looking for spacious sites with a lot of privacy but it is a shady, well wooded park in the middle of nowhere Iowa If you need a place to stop for a night or two.
