Love this campground! Of all of the places I’ve stayed this summer this has been my favorite. Great beach access, awesome views, popular campground, felt very safe, camp host and rangers were constantly patrolling.
I knocked two stars off of my review however due to two issues. The first issue is the road noise. It’s right off the 101 freeway and it can’t be helped. Big rigs, trains, and traffic at all hours of the day, very loud at night; bring earplugs.
The second issue has to do with our specific spot, number 87. It felt so so tiny. Now it might not be fair to judge the whole campground on a single spot, but I can judge that the very best spots in the park along the ocean view were at least twice the size of our spot, and were level, while our spot was halfway level and the other half fell straight down into a gulley.
That being said, I’ll be back here in the future. Armed with ear plugs, and booking the ocean view sites way ahead to ensure a good campsite.
Went camping here on a whim. We had finished our camping trip up north and we wanted to extend our trip another night.
We were surprised to find this campground was almost completely empty when we arrived. It was the day before the Labor Day weekend started, and it seemed like the calm before a storm.
While we were setting up the wind was blowing like crazy off the lake, and the ground was rock hard. Make sure you bring upgraded tent stakes or you’re going to have a bad day.
All of this was ok, where it turned for the worse was the odd cast of characters around us. When we arrived to our camp there was two random people chilling on our picnic table. When we were setting up for dinner a random car showed up at the empty campsite next to us and decided to make tea without any lights what so ever, bear in mind it’s pitch black and there’s no one around us. After making whatever they were making they drove off, felt very strange. Let’s just say I kept my machete tool a bit closer this night.
Now the wind had died down so we were expecting to get a nice rest, but our rv camper neighbor decided to run their generator until it ran out of gas. This of course was in violation of curfew. This wouldn’t have been a problem if the park was patrolled, but no one ever drove by to check on anything. It really did feel like we were on our own.
I think if the park was controlled a bit better we might have had a better time. But the parking being what it was, with two random sets of people who weren’t camping by us, and an rv running a generator in violation of camp standards without recourse I can’t recommend this place for camping.
My family and I came here for a quick end of year camping trip. We wanted something close to home, but able to get away. In this, the campground excels. It’s literally five minutes away from civilization, which we took advantage of on several occasions.
The campground is well maintained, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. All of these are huge pros, and if that’s where the story ended I’d be giving this campground five stars.
However the biggest issue my family and I had was with our neighbors. From generators running all night (the staff refunded our night, and rangers spoke with the rv owner) to people coming and going all night. The park for some reason doesn’t have a closed gate policy, and that encourages people to come and go as they please all day and all night. On our first night we had a camper setup next to us at 1030pm, well after quiet time. They played music and stayed up until 4am. When I brought this to the staffs attention they offered to move us, which we accepted, but it was a huge inconvenience to have to tear down our camp and setup elsewhere due to our neighbors behavior.
The campground also had an air and culture of permanent campers, very few families, and very few tent campers. Most of the sites were full of old tore up cars, and old tore up rvs filled to the brim. We had a few moments where we joked we were on breaking bad. I understand that folks have to do everything they can to live their best life, and times aren’t always easy. That being said, if you’re camping during the week like we were, I’d expect to find the campground filled with folks that might not make your experience enjoyable, possibly even uncomfortable.
